Global Obesity Facts from Australia
Obesity affects more than one billion people globally, including 650 million adults, 340 million adolescents, and 39 million children, according to latest research. With the numbers continuing to rise, WHO projects that by 2025, roughly 167 million people will be overweight or obese, putting their health at risk. Obesity and overweight are characterized as abnormal or excessive fat build-up that can be harmful to one's health. Obesity affects the heart, liver, kidneys, joints, and reproductive system as a condition that affects all bodily systems.
Obesity, according to the WHO, is linked to a number of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, and stroke, as well as several types of cancer and mental health disorders. Obese persons are three times more likely to be hospitalised with COVID-19, according to the UN health agency. Obesity and overweight rates vary with remoteness, with the lowest prevalence in major cities.
In 2017–18, the proportion of overweight or obese Australian children and adolescents aged 2–17 living in Inner regional regions was greater than that of those living in Major cities (29 percent and 23 percent respectively). The proportion of children and adolescents living in Outer Regional and Remote Areas was 27%. (ABS 2019). 70 percent of adults aged 18 and over in Outer regional and rural areas and 71 percent in Inner regional areas were overweight or obese, compared to 65 percent in Major cities (after adjusting for age) (Huse et al., 2018).
Obesity In Australian Socio-Economic Areas
Obesity and overweight rates vary with socioeconomic status, with the greatest rates in the poorest communities. Obesity rates for children and adolescents aged 2–17 years old were 2.4 times higher (11%) in the lowest socioeconomic regions compared to the highest socioeconomic areas in 2017–18. (4.4 percent). Obesity and overweight rates were similarly greater in the lowest socioeconomic regions (28%) than in the highest socioeconomic areas (21%) for both (ABS 2019). In 2017–18, Australians aged 18 and over in the lowest socioeconomic regions were more likely than those in the highest socioeconomic areas to be overweight or obese: 72 percent compared to 62 percent (after adjusting for age) (Huse et al., 2018). The primary cause of this disparity was obesity rates (38 percent compared with 24 percent respectively). See how people's health varies depending on their socioeconomic status.
Obesity Disease Burden in Australia
At the same time, governments must collaborate to improve the food environment so that everyone can eat a nutritious diet and afford it. To do this, measures such as prohibiting the promotion of high-fat, high-sugar,...
