Biography, Nursing Philosophy, Goals, and Reflective Journals
To begin with, I am a registered nurse from India, holding a Bachelor of Science degree of four years duration. I also have a nursing experience of four years. I have served as a staff nurse in a hospital and my duties included development and implementation of nursing care plans, providing medications, and also facilitating treatments, as per the description of doctors.
Philosophy of Nursing
Philosophy is the study that consists of basic principles and concepts on a specific subject. The philosophy of nursing is no different and it allows to
ing to surface the fundamental basis of theories. In the discussion presented by Bender (2018) it is presented that the philosophical stance of nursing for nurses revolve around the paradigms of person, health, environment, and nursing itself. The philosophy of nursing developed by me is a combination of extracts from the theories given by Ramona Mercer, Faye Abdellah, and Hildegard Peplau. The person receiving healthcare should be treated with respect and care (Lusk & Fater, 2013) and more so if the patient is a pregnant lady, as she is going through a numerous change (Fraser, Grant, & Mannix, 2016) and therefore principles of human relations (Hagerty et al., 2017), should not be neglected in such cases. The individual needs of the patient should be understood, and a holistic approach should be adopted to assist in the progressive healing of the patient. The development of required care plans and also the integration of interpersonal relationships is important to ensure that the patients have a positive and progressive healing. The conclusions drawn in the work by Lopes (2017) highlight that the formation and maintenance of interpersonal relationships can become a part of therapeutic intervention in achieving nursing competency. Through the meaningful relationships, the patients feel safe and comfortable with nurses and more so in case of attainment of maternity, which also supports the philosophy of nursing.
Long-Term and Short-Term Goals
Presently, I am pursuing Graduate Diploma of Nursing with a long-term professional goal of obtaining a master’s degree in Nursing and Teaching in a nursing program. The aim is based on the understanding that a master’s degree will add to my cu
ent knowledge and experience. It will help me achieve a higher-level training that in turn will enhance my background, skills, and also exposure. In order to achieve my defined goal, I am cu
ently focusing on the short-term goals like attaining as much exposure as possible and also focusing on enhancing my knowledge in the nursing domain. Ryan-Krause (2016) has discussed in his work that the process of focusing on the experiences that can be attained from all across the world helps an individual to widen his horizons and extend beyond the limitations. In the work by MacCosham & Gravelle (2017) it is highlighted that the development of an understanding about the constraints, negotiation, motivation, and participative elements can benefit the individuals in developing and improvising their short- and long-term goals. The application of extending my boundaries and learning more than before is based on SMART goals that I have set for myself.
Specific: Taking on a higher education degree and gaining experience through further exposure in the nursing field.
Measurable: The scores attained in the degree examination and the patient feedback will be helpful in measuring the success of the specific goals.
Attainable: In the discussion presented by Woolley & Fishbach (2016) it is stated that the rewards associated with set goals make them even more persuasive. A proper plan to get enrolled in the master’s program will make the goal attainable. Also, there are numerous internships that I can choose from to gain exposure to patient care and management.
Relevant: My personal short-term goal is the completion of the diploma program in nursing and it makes the pursual of master’s degree in nursing and teaching a relevant aspect. However, finances play a major role in the process and as argued by Datu, Yuen, & Chen (2018), the financial perspectives can turn into major setback for the individuals. I might have to consider taking an educational loan if I do not get the scholarship for my desired program....
