This case study is based on the information and study of the Gond community, mainly based at the Deccan Peninsular region of India. The project mainly focuses on the community development of the people by maintain the ecological balance and developing their economic condition through various government schemes. As most of the people of this community are not being able to avail the basic requirements for leading a normal progressive life such as proper food, shelter, education, medical accessibility.
This project is mainly focused on various government schemes that could benefit the Gond community people in a better way. In addition, this literature review would focus on how the NGO’s are helping in the betterment for peoples of Gond community like an NGO named Lok Biradari Prakalp, which is established in 1973, mainly looking after the education and healthcare in Bhamragad taluk of Gadchiroli (Maharashtra, India), where many Madia Gond live (World Travel Guide, 2019).
Background of Gond
The Gonds are the people of the tribal community who live all over the Deccan Peninsular Region. They are also known as Koi or Koitur as they are mainly staying at the mountainous region. Their origin dates back at 15th century where the mighty kingdoms rule Gondvana was there up to 18th century from where the name Gond has come. They live all over the central Indian states such as Maharashtra, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and parts of Andhra Pradesh (World Travel Guide, 2019). They are the largest tribe in India, with around the population of four million stays in Central India.
Mostly they stay around the Satpura hills, Maikala Range, Son-Deogarh uplands of Bastar Plateau and Garhjat Hills of northern Odisha. Mainly the people of this region wear traditional Indian dress (Singh, 2015). There primary occupation is agriculture. However, some people of this community have risen in their status and have become landowners. Herding cattle is also a part of occupation for Gond peoples. The primary food of these peoples is two millets known as Kodo and Kutki. Vegetables are mainly collected from forest or they grow in their gardens or fields. Gonds do also grow tobacco for smoking and make liquor from Mahua tree.
There primary language is Gond, but apart from that, they also do have good command over Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Parsi and many other Dravidian languages (Rao et al., 2017). The people of this community come under backward category of people and mostly they do not have access to education and healthcare. Still they follow primitive and not scientifically proved treatment procedure, which can somewhat maybe called superstitious. The total literacy rate among the Gonds is 25% in Maharashtra and roughly 15% in Madhya Pradesh with only 4% literacy rate among the women (Lok Biradari Prakalp, 2019).
Gonds cele
ate most of their festivals with songs and dance. The popular Dandri dance of their represent their mythological significance. Sometimes the dance is done for fun purpose. Dhulia is a group of professional musician caste and Pardhans (bards) preserve legends, myths, and history, passing these traditions on from generation to generation. Their main ornaments are wearing heavy silver ornaments, with coloured glass bangles and ma
iage necklaces made of small black beads (Lok Biradari Prakalp, 2019). They also tattoo their bodies.
They have a rich tradition of arts, which includes body tattooing, pottery, basket making and floor painting. They also do paint their houses with black and red colour, which highlight the festivals and depict animals, birds, human figures, hunting and dancing. The Gonds also do face typical problems and exploitation as other tribal people face like social exploitation and discrimination. They are forced to live on less productive and remote areas (World Travel Guide, 2019). They face a high level of poverty and due to lack of education and low level of literacy further reduce their economic opportunity for growth.
