Ans 1.2: Descriptive statistics is used to quantitatively describe the features of the data like its
central tendency, variation and symmetricity where as inferential statistics is used to draw
inferences or information about the population using sample values. Inferential Statistics uses
probability theory to draw conclusions about population.
Ans 1.4: Four major methods of collecting data are:
1. Direct Interviews: In this kind of method of collection of data, investigator conducts
personal/telephonic interview and gets all the information needed.
2. Mailing the questionnaire: This is a very popular method of collecting the data. The relevant
questionnaire for the survey is mailed to the target population. This is a faster means of data
collection.
3. Schedule method: In this method if our target population is very large and uneducated,
then a schedule is developed and many enumerators are appointed by investigator to collect
the data. For example a population census.
4. Indirect Information: sometimes the data is collected from the relatives of friends in case of
non availability of the interviewee.
