Last stage of serious illness requires both medical and emotional support.  Hospice care is a 
medical service provided to the people with incurable illness with the objective of improving 
the quality of their life and relieving their pain (Forman, 2003). Under this special care is 
given to the people with serious illness in their final days. This care includes emotional, 
psychological and medical support. Hospice care is an end of life care financing long term 
services. With the help of hospice care this difficult journey is eased. The central idea of this 
essay is to understand and examine the policy of hospice care in USA.  
Hospice care in USA  
 
Hospice care in USA can be traced back from 1963, this care is available for people of any 
age and suffering from any disease and the prognosis analysis declare that person to die 
within six month of time. The main focus of the hospice care is to care the patient and not to 
cure the person. According to research around 1.58 million patients have received this care in 
USA. Both, the number of hospice care program and patients have increased in the last 
decade.  
There are different types of hospice care provided to the patients. It includes care at home and 
hospital. In USA the expense of the hospice care is taken by the general insurance provider. 
There are many non profit organizations and committees providing hospice care support. The 
largest health care plan of USA, Medicare also includes the provision for hospice care. All 
Medicare health plan includes the hospice care. Generally, the hospice care is given for six 
month or less than six month, but the duration can be increased in certain cases.

In the year 2006, hospice and palliative medicine has been regarded as a medical specialty by 
The American Board of Medical Specialties. During the same year the hospice industry of the 
country received a fund for $13 Million of Fujitsu Technology. The increasing use of nursing 
Hospice care facility leads to increasing cost of Medicare payments requires policy review by 
the Medicare payment advisory committee. There is a need for reviewing the reimbursement 
policy of Medicare (Miller, 2007).
