CISC 672 Final project 1
Final Project
For your final project, you can either develop a visualization notebook or write a paper:
Visualization notebook: Choose a dataset, formulate an interesting hypothesis, and use
visualization to explore this. Your project should comprise an IPython notebook that develops
the visualization in increments, using code and text cells, similar in format to the notebooks used
in this class. Include a concluding text cell that summarizes your findings.
Paper: Write a paper that investigates an interesting problem or method in data visualization.
The paper should provide background (including references to relevant literature) and
motivation, explain the problem or method, and discuss future work. It should run about
8 – 12 pages in length not counting figures.
Three requirements for all projects
1. Project proposal: Please submit a project proposal by the proposal due date. Your proposal,
which should run no more than a page, should include:
• a
ief description of your proposed project;
• the project’s objective; and
• relevant references if any.
I will review your proposal and respond with recommendations. I'll also indicate whether I
elieve your project is too ambitious, not ambitious enough, or just right.
2. Project submission: Submit your project by the project due date. Your submission will be
either a Word doc or an IPython notebook. If the latter, also submit any datasets or images your
notebook requires (you can submit a zip archive if your project spans multiple files).
3. Presentation: We’ll hold project presentations the last week of the term. For your
presentation, either present the key points of your paper (using a PowerPoint slide set) or step
through the cells of your notebook. Presentations should run about 15 to 20 minutes, though this
may vary as necessary.
Note: Due to the large class size, presentations are optional. If you intend to present your project,
please email me in advance of our last class meeting so that I can prepare a schedule of
presentations. If you choose not to present, your final project will count 30% toward your final
grade; if you choose to present, your final project will count 25% and your presentation will
count 5% toward your final grade. I encourage you to present, though there will be no penalty for
not presenting.
