GABA
GABA stands for Gamma Amino Butyric Acid. It is an amino acid and acts as primary inhibitory neurotransmitter present in the
ain and spinal cord. It is widely present in the neurons of the cortex. It binds to post synaptic GABA receptors and acts at the synapse between the neurons. GABA receptors hyperpolarize the cells by modulating the ion channels thus inhibits the transmission of action potential.
GABA is involved in GABAergic pathway in
ain. GABA is produced in the GABAergic neurons of the CNS, through the conversion from glutamate (excitatory neurotransmitter) with help of enzyme Glutamic Acid Deca
oxylase (GAD). Post synthesis, GABA is released to the synaptic cleft and distributes to the receptors at the post synaptic area.
The receptors for GABA neurotransmitter include GABA-A and GABA-B. The GABA-A receptor is present in post synaptic sites of CNS. They are GABA gated chloride channels. After the binding of GABA, these ionotropic receptors mark an increase in...
