INTRODUCTION
Professional nursing standards has become a major assessment tool of clinical expertise and knowledge among registered nurses. It provides guidance to make appropriate improvements to ensure safety and competency of the healthcare organization as a whole. (“The importance of professional standards”, 2014). The article examines standard 2 and standard 4 of AHPRA Registered Nurse Standards in the practical context and future practice.
PROFESSIONAL NURSING STANDARDS
The AHPRA Registered Nurse Standards of practice takes into account the diverse cultural and linguistic aspects of Australian community in providing healthcare. Registered nurses are obliged to follow these standards as responsible members of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Nursing practice involves critical analysis, development of positive relationships, maintaining clinical efficiency and quality through comprehensive assessments, plan of action and continuous evaluation of the results obtained. Standard 2: Engages in therapeutic and professional relationships
Maintenance of quality professional and therapeutic relationship is the core of efficient nursing practice resulting in improved patient, family and job satisfaction and clinical outcome. The etiquettes of professional relationships need to be followed when dealing with coworkers, patients and carers (Roberts J et. al., 2015).
A trusted and empathetic therapeutic relationship outstands communication between nurse and the patient. Also, it is the key to effective communication for the patients and family to convey their concerns (Roberts J et. al., 2015).Active listening with ve

Proper eye contact, body language and positive responses like “I understand”,”I see…” are some of the ways to depict one’s level of involvement in a conversation along with proper tone adjustments. An insight into the patient and family experiences may help co
ect the false beliefs and help the patient to adhere to the treatment requirements. Therapeutic relationship demands efficient and timely response to the physical and emotional distress of the patient and carers. Thorough encouragement, understanding the patient’s cultural background, summarizing the details provided and explaining treatment procedures in a simple language are some of the steps whereby the patient and family find reliability in the Registered nurse.
It paves way for providing the desired patient-centred and family-centred care. Nurses should not merely represent themselves as task performers making patients to feel dormant. Active participation of patients in clinical decision making with prior understanding of treatment procedures enhance good interpersonal relationships (Kornhaber et. al. , 2016). For instance, a caring, compassionate and empathetic nursing approach is proved to alleviate suicidal tendencies (Lees, Procter & Fassett, 2014).
These relationships are bound by professional constraints. Nurses should train themselves not to become emotionally overwhelmed at any stage of clinical practice. Nursing interventions involve touching various body parts, however, it demands strict measures to ensure patient privacy.(Roberts J et. al., 2015)
