Introduction 
The theory of ‘Utilitarianism’ signifies maximization of utility derived from 
implementation of healthcare rules and principles over the ongoing reform process of the 
healthcare industry. The theory is based over the welfarist philosophy by using four tenets of 
economics. These include maximization of utility derived, sovereignty of consumer on the basis 
of service utilization, welfarism and finally consequentialism. 
The paper discusses about the application of utilitarianism for managing the role and 
responsibilities attached with the healthcare managers. The theory of utilitarianism reflects 
various value dilemmas also that must be confronted by the healthcare providers.
Theory of Utilitarianism 
Embodiment of positive behavioral proposition by making correct decisions which has 
been chosen in the rational manner is called as utilitarianism. By applying this theory, 
individuals are able to make judgments regarding their own welfare in the best possible manner. 
They make use of consequentialism by judging their core actions on the basis of the 
consequences or results of any changes or reforms undertaken in healthcare management of 
activities. Finally, the last tenet is about welfarism in which resource allocation is used to judge 
the utility level derived from applying basic fundamentals of rational behavior (Mack, 
September-December, 2004).
