Type 2 Diabetes- Impact and Control Initiatives
Type 2 Diabetes- Impact and Control Initiatives
Abstract
Blood sugar is often underestimated when it comes to healthy living. However, it is a very vital component of the human body. When blood sugar remains high over a prolonged period of time, the resulting condition is called diabetes. Primarily, Diabetes is classified into three types- Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes
This report focuses on Type 2 Diabetes, its effects on the human body, its risks and complications. The report also examines the effect of various government policies regarding Type 2 Diabetes. It then goes on to conduct a
ief over the opinions of other organizations over these regulations regarding Diabetes.
Introduction
Diabetes is increasingly becoming a cause of concern world-wide. This concern is just as great in UK. The statistics in UK regarding diabetes are alarming. Studies show that more people than ever before have diabetes in the UK and an even greater people are at risk of Type 2 Diabetes (Public Health England, 2018).
If accurate data is analysed, it would be noted that around 3.7 million people in UK have been diagnosed with diabetes (see chart). With such alarming rates, it is important that necessary action be taken by both the government as well as the populace to control the prevalence of diabetes as well as controlling it (Public Health England. 2018).
Types of Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition that hampers a body’s ability to produce or make use of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that assists the turning of glucose or sugar into energy. Two main types of diabetes are prevalent today (Diabetes UK, 2014). These are
1- Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is also often called insulin-dependent diabetes. It is an immune system disorder in which the body’s immune system itself destroys the cells that produce insulin in the pancreas. The body’s ability to generate insulin is thus destroyed. In Type 1 diabetes, patients have to take insulin throughout their lives.
2- Type 2 Diabetes
In Type 2 diabetes, the patient’s pancreas is unable to use insulin properly. This results in the body being unable to adequately synthesize sugar from the blood and convert it to energy.
Type 2 Diabetes is predominantly related to insulin resistance. Earlier on, it was more prevalent in the older populations. However, nowadays the risk of Type Diabetes is present even in the younger population. This can primarily be attributed to poor lifestyle, inadequate exercise habits and poor diet consumptions.
Another type of diabetes, namely gestational diabetes, refers to high blood sugar that occurs during pregnancy. This diabetes usually resolves once the baby is born. Gestational diabetes increases the risk of complications during pregnancy. It also amplifies the chances of developing Type 2 Diabetes later.
Type 2 Diabetes- Overview
Diabetes progresses through stages. In general, if blood sugar remains higher than normal over a long period of time, the condition develops into Diabetes. In the initial phases like prediabetes, the blood sugar can be controlled enough so as not to progress into diabetes. This can be done effectively through proper diet, exercise, and constant monitoring of blood sugars.
However, if it is left untreated, it can lead to various serious complications that can even be life-threatening. Some potential complications can be heart disease, kidney damage, nerve damage and stroke (Diabetes UK, 2014).
Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes displays many symptoms. However, since the symptoms may not be conclusive, they can go unattended to. Dr. Ramachandran (2014) relates the primary symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes to...
