In cases of jealousy, hatred or unacceptance of the sibling, as shown in the scenario, parents can alternatively use the three key parenting styles in order to manage their child. For example, Mary or Paul could implement authoritative parenting style by being warmer and more responsive towards John. They could inform their child with some clear rules of behaviour regarding their sibling, and be supportive of the little ones (Lind, 2017). 
In case John persists his current behaviour despite this style, his parents could change their parenting style to that of authoritarian by being strict with him and not responding to his bedtime tantrums. Gradually, if John improves his behaviour after some days, as advised by Saxe (2015), parents could switch their style to permissive one, by being a little lenient with the child, reducing the intensities of the rules and indulging them with their siblings.
