Preparation for Summative Assignment
Lynn McCullagh
The Research question-Choose 1 only
1. What is the recommended management of an adult with Covid in a care home
2. What is the most effective method of treating a patient with a venous leg ulcer in the community
3. What is the most effective management of an elderly malnourished patient who is admitted to hospital
The actual topic is secondary and the main thrust of the essay is about how you search and demonstrating understanding the articles that you have found.

The Essay
Conduct a literature search using the skills developed during the module.
Explain and reflect on the literature searching process and include a table of the search terms used.
Choose 5 studies or pieces of literature related to the question from the search and describe them, comment on why you chose them, their findings and their relevance to your nursing practice.
Let’s chunk this down

Using Evidence-based practice (EBP) encourages nurses to give the highest cali
e and most cost-effective patient care” (Polit and Beck, 2011).
According to Sackett (2011), evidence based practice can be defined as “the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of cu
ent best evidence in making decisions about the care of an individual patient. It means integrating individual clinical expertise with the best available external clinical evidence from systematic research” (Sackett, 2011).

Evidence based practice simply means an approach that facilitates clinicians to offer the highest quality of care in meeting the needs of patients and their families. (Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt, 2010).

Introductions
According to the nursing and midwifery council (NMC) nurses must always practice with the best existing evidence by making sure any information or advice given is evidence-based (NMC, 2015).  EBP is an important part of adult nursing because every action taken must be up to date and have a good logic based  on the best evidence available.
Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is an integrated view of research evidence, medical expertise and patient's preferences. This is an excellent approach towards problem-solving, which inspires and encourages nurses to provide excellent and individualised patient care (Pereira et al., 2018

This assignment will demonstrate a review of literature undertaken to select five studies including what databases were used and inclusion and exclusion criteria. It will explain what each study was about, how it was conducted and what the findings were.
Search (approx. 800 words)
Introduce your search terms. What keywords would we look for with these research questions?
What is the recommended management of an adult with Covid in a care home
What is the most effective method of treating a patient with a venous leg ulcer in the community
What is the most effective management of an elderly malnourished patient who is admitted to hospital

Search
Outline how you performed your literature search i.e. what databases you used, inclusion and exclusion criteria, any other limits used and provide rationale for these decisions with references. E.g.

Search
Outline how you identified your key articles and the reasons why. Include enough detail so that your search could be replicated by the person reading it. Include a copy of your search in the appendices
11
Discussion (approx. 1000 words)
As the main focus of this assignment is the search and not the topics as such, give a
ief description of each paper to answer the following questions;
What were the studies about?
How were they conducted?
What did they find?
Remember to use research terminology where appropriate
Only 200 words per pape
e.g. quantitative, qualitative and provide definitions to explain these terms.
12
Conclusion (approx. 300 words)
This should summarise how you conducted the literature search and the results that you found as well as the key points from your articles.
Revisit the original research question to ensure this has been answered.
13
Implications for practice (approx. 300 words)
Outline the implications for your practice as an adult nurse.
What has the evidence added to your knowledge base?
What further information would you like to know?
How does the process of searching for the evidence inform your practice?
Were there gaps in the evidence?

Introduction
Evidence based practice in nursing is the part of decisions made to enhance the quality of life of patients. In fact, it is the rigorous procedure engaging analysis and incorporation of empirical knowledge in clinical practices (Salvador et al, 2018). A constant update is ca
ied out through research studies and their analysis is implemented in practices. In modern context, nursing profession has become more accountable for actions than it was before; in previous decades, inclusion of technology and advanced care alternatives were limited to the clinical experts; nursing professionals used to work as the functional mediums or supporting units in delivering quality healthcare outcomes (Silver et al, 2018). The scenario has rapidly changed or rather; it has evolved in favour of nursing professionals, expanding their roles in the context of supporting individual patients and their families. Evidence based practices help nursing professionals to structure the care plans in the light of quality studies, which have yielded fruitful results and thus, they are able to synthesize the amount of positive interventions required in the context of healthcare settings (Ballesteros et al, 2018).
In the context of the above, it should be noted that there are multiple aspects of evidence-basedpractices, which can be applied in the context of nursing. When it is refe
ed to NMC Code, patient centred care plans are reckoned as important domain of care. Nursing professionals are expected to ca
y out professional research with a view to develop patient centred management plan and its perfect execution. This is done with regard to achieve the expected degree of accountability not only towards the patient but also to the overall healthcare setting (Marx et al, 2018). The following analysis examines five quality research studies and how it is applied in the context of managing needs and expectations of the elderly patient who is malnourished at the time of being admitted to the hospital. The role of technology as well as physical management is investigated through adhering to the principles of evidence-based practices.
Search: Literature Exploration and Investigation
At first, it is important to overview the process of finding precisely the best suitable and qualified literature (studies conducted recently pertaining to support the topic chosen) and develops the ideal search process. In order to fulfil the primary requisites of the chosen topic, which is to understand the prefe
ed mode of managing malnourished adult in hospital, the following research method was applied. The first key term to search for was sources of malnourishment in elderly in hospital settings. The search concluded with various options and studies conducted at global level. Then, the exclusion of global studies was ca
ied out and the search options were limited to UK only. Thus, two parallel search categories were created to investigate the basic aspect of the question. Upon being detailed, the studies concluded on similar notes in terms of managing the care plans for malnourished adults in hospitals. Thus, the range of studies was accepted for any nationality or population. This is applicable with regard to the concept of evidence-based practice itself because when evidences are collected, synthesis of the research outcomes is compared with all available studies i.e. the comparative overview is taken for all studies, which have been included in the process of evidence-based practices.
Further, after the studies were selected and carefully compared to each other, the inclusion and exclusion of key terms was again applied to search. For example, as the chosen topic directed the study to be restricted to the study of managing the needs and expectations of malnourished adults in hospitals, there was no use of including minors, teenagers or children based studies in it. The inclusion of terms can be understood by the following table:
    Key Terms
    Included
    Excluded Terms
    · Malnourishment
· Elderly population between 50 to 60 years
· The process of managing diet based needs
· Initial assessment of the patients at the time of their admittance in hospitals
· The background of the patients for ensuring sources of malnourishment in the past
· The studies having children included in understanding the potential sources of malnourishment as genetic facto

    · Studies beyond ten years of publications
· Studies having no literature review or findings section
· The studies having general review of concepts
· The studies having less number of participants
Selection of database was the core strength of developing the search strategy for the chosen topic. Therefore, qualified and valuable database such of NICE was investigated with a view to get the required amount of data to be presented. At the same time, the process and delivery of the key terms were designed to support the text only i.e. full text of the chosen terms was placed in the search box of the database along with applying filters. These filters essentially included the dates of publications because it enhances the quality and updates linked to the database search. In clinical and nursing studies, articles, which are older than five years, should not be used, as they do not render desired information and updates. Thus, five articles were selected from the NICE only. These articles were between the year ranges of past ten years, which implies that the search strategy was guided by the principle of applying best efforts to choose the updated articles.
Finally, the search of peer...
