For this assignment you will need to identify a single piece of qualitative research in the form of a published, peer reviewed article. You will assess the quality of this work using the criteria outlined in Popay, et al. (1998) ‘Rationale and standards for the systematic review of qualitative literature in health services research’ (note that the term ‘health services research’ covers research in any health setting, for example, clinical, community, health services management). Identify a qualitative study, published in a peer reviewed journal on one of the five issues listed below: 1). Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus; 2). Lung Cancer; 3). Obesity; 4). Under-nutrition; 5). Mosquito borne diseases (i.e. Malaria, Dengue Fever or Ross River Virus) (Archaeology students will choose a qualitative study exploring social significance or cultural heritage, health and/or wellbeing). Your task in this essay is to critically and thoughtfully review your chosen study judging its quality using Popayet als XXXXXXXXXXcriteria and provide justifications for your assessment.Criteria for Grading Your essay will be assessed by the extent to which it: • Identifies a genuine example of qualitative research • Understands Popay’s criteria • critically and thoughtfully evaluates the quality of a piece of qualitative research against Popay’s criteria • demonstragtes a sophisticated understanding of the issues involved in creating excellent qualitative research • conveys an understanding of the relevance and the implications of good qualitative research for research in health (or archaeology) • is clearly written with accurate spelling, grammar and sentence and paragraph construction, introduction and conclusion. • Is properly referenced

Introduction
Research is a demanding field which needs scientists to be hardworking and innovative. Years of rigorous and disciplined working requires that the various discoveries be expressed in clear, vivid, accurate as well as precise words in the form of research or review papers. According to Popay et al. (1998), there are certain measures or standards that form the basis for qualitative evaluation of scientific literature. These include availability of proof to justify the co
ectness or appropriateness of the work. Besides this, the other factors to be considered include the evaluation of standards in qualitative research for taking logical and coherent decisions and subsequent upgradation of information obtained, analysis of methodological, theoretical as well as integrative validity of the paper. The following essay attempts to assess the validity of the paper titled “Women’s perspectives are required to inform the development of maternal obesity services: a qualitative study of obese pregnant women’s experiences” by Hestlehurst et al. (2018) based on the guidelines suggested by Popay et al. (2018).
Criteria for validity in qualitative research
As observed by Popay et al. (1998), the lookout for guidelines to justify the validity of qualitative research has been ongoing since many years. In this field, there have been two predominant concepts. One of them refuse to accept any uniqueness in qualitative research and believe that it is also characterized by the basic domains of ‘reliability’, ‘validity’, ‘generalizability’ as well as ‘objectivity’ that also underline the quantitative research. Some believe that there are no evaluation standards for analyzing a qualitative paper whereas others are of the opinion that all criteria devised to evaluate qualitative literature are below the mark and skeptical. Although as suggested by Bryman (2017), it is a challenging task to evaluate qualitative research, there are certain overlapping problems for evaluation of both qualitative and quantitative research. In most cases the lack of precise and accurate information about the background, underlying principle, materials used, methods implemented, preventive as well as precautionary steps undertaken, results obtained and inference drawn gives rise to the problems. These criteria need to be mentioned clearly as these help in the evaluation of the quality and standards of the research paper. It has also been postulated that a basic criteria to be fulfilled for a qualitative research paper to be considered good would be to evaluate whether it initiated the generation of theory and could be applied to different social su
oundings. In certain cases, researchers have put forward the evaluation of qualitative research by the ability to evaluate its ‘trustworthiness’ and ‘authenticity’. In the evaluation process, heed should be paid to observing the type of knowledge generated as a byproduct of the various methods undertaken as well as the co
esponding objects to which the various methods are...
