Deviance: Violating a Folkway 
Deviance can be termed as “the recognized violation of cultural norms” (Hollemans, 
1998). Throughout the society a wide range of deviant behavior is observable. But interestingly 
enough deviance is not always negative and can render some positive impact on the society too. 
But though deviance in some respect can be positive, the primary endeavor in this paper is not to 
discuss about the positive effects of deviance rather the primary objective in this paper is to 
reveal how breaking a social norm can generate dilemmatic situations for an individual. It is to 
be remembered that violating folkways (behaviors that are socially approved but insignificant in 
respect of morality) should also be termed as deviance, and in this paper such a form of violation 
and its after-effects are going to be discussed.  
For the sake of experimentation, I did choose myself to be the subject and adhering to the 
objective of my experiment I did prepare myself to violate one of the folkways that are quite in
