Purpose and Role of FDA
FDA has tried to improve the food safety concerns but the recent reports of multistate foodborne disease out
eaks have left the system with loopholes that can affect food quality. After being repeatedly criticized about FDA only being concerned about food safety problems and not, the preventive functions, FDA has made comprehensive study to
idge the gaps in the food safety system. Both animal and human food is included in the term food. FDA and a few other agencies are responsible for providing the best food safety measures.
The Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service of U.S. is mainly liable for the security of the products including egg, meat and poultry (Allender et al., 2020). It also promises the security of alcoholic drinks along with the Alcohol and Tobacco Trade Bureau of the Department of the Treasury. A new plan has been offered by the FDA under Bush administration in the Food Protection Plan: An Integrated Strategy for Protecting the Nation ‘s Food Supply. The idea involves 3 main components to be dealt with and they are intervention, prevention and response.
FDA has a joint jurisdiction with the local and state government to provide food safety (Rustia et al., 2021). There are main food safety managing FDA offices and they are the Office of Foods, the Centre for Veterinary Medicine, the Commissioner’s office, the Regulatory Affairs Office, the National Centre for Toxicological Research and the Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. The main purpose of these offices along with FDA, are to deal with food programs, the ones most relevant to food safety.
Purpose and Role of USDA
USDA is responsible for managing the ever-changing food landscape which are related to the food distribution and processing. USDA ensure inspection of domestic products, import and export items, risk evaluation and also informing the general mass regarding why food safety is important. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) department of FDA is responsible to ensure safety measures of meat, egg along with dairy products (Fung et al., 2018).
USDA follows a few agendas including protection of public health and foodborne disease prevention, improving general mass education and outreach and investing in modern technology, processes and equipment to protect public health. Under the first agenda USDA aspires to prevent minimum 25,000 foodborne diseases and reducing the occu
ence of pathogens in poultry. It prevents the recall of unsafe food through the implementation of “test and hold” policy during December, 2012. It still tries to improve the Public Health Information System.
