ic
Overview: In this milestone, you will conduct a literature review based on the methodology you outlined in Milestone Two. You will read and review primary and
secondary sources to gain an understanding of the social problem or need that you plan to address in your human services proposal. Consider, for example,
what society says about the problem, some historical aspects of the problem, and how the political climate has impacted the problem or need. Discuss some
interventions that have been used in other communities to address the social problem or need, as well as the effectiveness of the interventions.
The literature review will help you gain an understanding of not only the social problem or need you have selected, but also different methods that have been
used to alleviate or reduce the problem. It is especially important to identify methods used in diverse communities. Politics often impact social problems. Use
the literature review to examine how the political climate has impacted the social problem or need on which you are focusing. Historical factors may also impact
the social problem. Throughout history, social problems have been defined differently, and thus, have influenced the focus of not only money but also expertise
in alleviating social problems. History, politics, and societal and other factors will impact how a social problem is defined, what actions are taken to influence the
social problem, and how much expertise will be used in search of a solution to the social problem. Use the literature review to identify these factors.
Prompt: Submit a draft of your literature review and needs analysis addressing all critical elements from Sections III and IV of Capstone Component 1. The
literature review section should include mostly primary and some secondary resources that apply to the social problem or need you identified, as well as the
community you selected in Milestone One. For assistance with primary and secondary sources, consider using this SNHU Li
ary resource. Use research that has
een conducted to solve a similar social problem in other places and in diverse communities. Ensure that at least one of the resources recommended adheres to
ethical/legal standards in human services. In the needs analysis, you should draw conclusions in response to information you included in your Milestone One
findings for your identified community issue and Milestone Three literature review while demonstrating cultural sensitivity and good ethical decision making. Be
sure to review the ru
ic for additional criteria on how to succeed in this milestone.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
III. Literature Review: Using primary and secondary sources, analyze how the problem is being addressed in other communities. How prevalent is it?
Through a review of the literature, evaluate the social, political, and historical milestones and trends relative to the identified problem. You should also
eview interventions that have been attempted in other communities and their success, or lack thereof.
IV. Needs Analysis: This section should include your analysis of the information you gathered on the community. This will provide the conclusions you have
drawn from thinking about the findings you described in the preceding section. Based on your assessment of the community and comprehensive analysis
and evaluation of the problem:
• What is the magnitude of the problem in the community?
• What resources and interventions cu
ently exist in the community?
• Provide a description of the impact the cu
ent resources and interventions are having on the population. Are they effective? Why or why not?
• What are the obstacles that exist in the community that prevent impacting or addressing the problem?
• Why is this problem one that the community needs to address? What are the demographics of the individuals affected by the problem?

Guidelines for Submission: Your draft of the literature review and needs analysis must be approximately 3–5 pages in length and must be written in APA format.
Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and one-inch margins.
Note: The “Possible Indicators of Success” in the ru
ic below are examples for you and your instructor of the types of concepts to look for in demonstrating
proficiency. They are neither exhaustive nor prescriptive and should be used as guides for methods of illustrating how your capstone embodies the outcome. In
the milestone, you will be assessed on your progress towards meeting all of the course outcomes with this ru
ic. If you are making progress towards meeting
the course outcome, you will receive “In Progress”, if your submission does not show progress towards the course outcome, you will receive “Not Evident”.
Incorporate feedback from you instructor to help better meet each course outcome in your final submission.
The final capstone submission will assess students’ proficiency in the course outcomes.
The milestone submissions demonstrate whether students are making progress toward
meeting the outcomes.
Students will receive “In Progress” if they are
making progress toward the course outcome.
