    Female genital mutilation is a dreadful truth face by a large number if girls in the parts of Africa. Through the movie Moolaade, the director has aimed at throwing light on the issue. The focus of the movie is on the women of a small village named Burkina Faso who come forward and rebel against genital mutilation. The movie has multiple layers to it as it signifies the role of patriarchy in female circumcision. It also throws light on the gender roles and denial of the validity of ancient custom.
    Moolaade is a protective spirit invoked by the film’s hero, Colle, when four girls approach her to take refugee from the purification ceremony of mutilation of genitals. The movie highlights the difficulties faced by Colle when she tries to keep the girls protected through the cast spelled by her. The fact that even other women in the village did not support her initially
