Movie Review: Patriarchy, Gender Roles, and Repudiation of Ancient Practices in Moolaade
	Female genital mutilation is a dreadful truth face by a large number if girls in the parts of Africa. Through the movie Moolaade, the director has aimed at throwing light on the issue. The focus of the movie is on the women of a small village named Burkina Faso who come forward and rebel against genital mutilation. The movie has multiple layers to it as it signifies the role of patriarchy in female circumcision. It also throws light on the gender roles and denial of the validity of ancient custom. 
	Moolaade is a protective spirit invoked by the film’s hero, Colle, when four girls approach her to take refugee from the purification ceremony of mutilation of genitals. The movie highlights the difficulties faced by Colle when she tries to keep the girls protected through the cast spelled by her. The fact that even other women in the village did not support her initially brings forth the lack of understanding and ability of the women to take a path different from the traditional scenario. Though the movie shows that there are serious implications for Colle on rebelling against the ancient culture, it is to be noted that in real world changes are being brought in. In the discussion brought forth by Abathun, Gele, and Sundby (2017) it is discussed that the attitude of people towards the practice of female genital cutting is based on the ancient practices. The results obtained by the authors highlighted that men preferred marrying women that had not undergone circumcision.
