Brief Description of the Crime
Spark in his article focuses on the crime of mass killing. Mass killing is an intentional and a sudden killing of a large number of people simultaneously over a short period (Kollar & Charles, n.d, p.63).
Crime Data and Mass Killing
In January 2012, gun rampage left seven people dead in Oakland. In July 2011, eight people were reported dead during a shoot out in Seal Beach, California. On the same note, in 2012, an attack that was targeting Representative Ga
iel Giffords left six people dead and thirteen people injured in Arizona. The crime data in the article though seems rampant; the author argues that mass killing has reduced in the US. In the article, Professor James Fox who is a criminologist at Boston’s North-eastern University asserts that despite the extensive media coverage on mass killings, there has been no upward trend as far as mass murder is concerned.
Spark details the rate of mass killings in campuses. He alleges that at Blacksburg Campus in Virginia, a 23-year-old student killed thirty-two people in a shooting spree before finally killing himself.
