Evaluating Diets

It has been found that when First Nations people with type 2 diabetes stop eating the processed, fast food diet of today’s society and return to a traditional diet they lose weight and their blood glucose levels return to normal levels.

What is it about the traditional diet that makes it a diet which is healthier? Do traditional diets from other cultures have the same effects on type 2 diabetics?

What about all the weight loss diets we hear about every day? Are these diets a healthy way to lose weight?

Your Task:

You are to evaluate 3 diets;

  1. A traditional diet examples; First Nations, Ramadan, Kosher, Lent, Inuit, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, European before 1900’s, your grand or great-grand parents’ diet.
  2. Your typical diet – average out what you eat for a week.
  3. A weight loss diet, or diet system examples, South Beach Diet, Mediterranean Diet, Grapefruit Diet, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Herbal Magic etc.ORA dietary practice such as vegetarianism, 100 mile diet, Kosher, Gluten-Free etc.

Requirements:

  1. A nutritional break down on the amount of carbs, lipids, and proteins each diet supplies on average. For specific foods information, you can check out this site.https://www.fatsecret.com/calories-nutrition/
  2. Is the diet deficient in any of the vital nutrients we need.
  3. Does the diet supply too much of anything that could be harmful to us. Example simple sugars.
  4. A sample menu for a day.
  5. Reflection – Evaluate the diets what are the positive and negatives of each. Are the menu items hard to find? Is this a good choice for weight loss? Does this diet endanger your health?
  6. Your information will displayed on a poster(s).
