Essay Assignment
AVS 2060 ESSAY ASSIGNMENT
What is it?
You are to word process a two to three page (no more, no less!), double-spaced essay on
a flight physiology related subject that you will select from a short list. Use #10 or #12
font sizes. Font types should be Arial or Times New Roman. Set 1.0” margins on the top,
ottom, left and right margins.
Subjects
Select one of the following physiological problems of flight:
• Hypoxia
• The “graveyard spin” and/or ”graveyard spiral”
• Fatigue
Obviously I do not what you to give me a complete regurgitation of what is covered in
class, what’s on the PowerPoint or what is in the text, if you chose a topic that’s already
een discussed in class!! Please take some time to find some other information on the
subject to use as content for your essay. This is practice for critical thinking and writing
so you need to take a position on what you find and make sure that you defend any of
your own opinions that you include in your work.
Structure
As always, your essay should have an introduction, a main body and a conclusion. The
conclusion is there as a short summary of what you have written – it should not add any
new material.
In the main body of your essay, I am looking for you to discuss the following areas:
• Related physiology (a physiological description of what you are discussing)
• Implications for flight crew (what are the dangers that could be caused)
• Avoiding the problem (how should flight crews try and avoid this problem)
Do not miss any of these areas out – you can see from the scoring ru
ic that they are
individually looked at.
Style, References and Citations
This must be written as an academic paper and be accurately referenced. Sources should
e listed APA style as follows:
In APA style, the sources in a paper are listed alphabetically on a separate page
headed References. It follows the final page of the text and is numbered. Entries
appear in alphabetical order according to the last name of the author; two or
more works by the same author appear in chronological order by date of
publication date. When there are two or more books or articles by the same
author, repeat the name of the author in each entry.
This separate page must be in addition to the essay pages. A simplified guide on how to
list sources and cite them within the text can be found here:
http:
healthlinks.washington.edu/hsl/styleguides/apa.html
It is important that you follow this style – doing so is worth 10% of the total grade for
this paper.
Grading
Grading will be ca
ied out in accordance with the Ru
ic laid out on the next page. Total
points are 1000. Note that there are 200 points (20%) awarded for co
ect spelling and
grammar. This should encourage you to proof read your work more than once. There will
e nothing more frustrating than producing an essay with excellent content but only
gaining a CB grade for it because it was very poorly written.
