ENN531: Advanced Materials & Engineering Application – Practice Report
Date: Time:
Students Name: ______________________________________ Student No______________
Criteria / weighting (%) 7 6 5 4/3 2/1
1. Describe the aims of the practice, facilities used and operating parameters (10%) Description is clear, concise, with all aspects. Description is clear with 1 or 2 aspects missing Description is with gaps and 3 or 4 aspects missing Description is patchy with many aspects missing Description is unclear and most of the aspects missing
2. Present the results for each test (CNT & EBSD) (10%) All results are presented, correct, complete and accurate Most results are correct with 1 or 2 mistakes or errors Most results are correct with 3 or 4 mistakes or errors The result of one test (CNT or EBSD) is basically correct but many errors in the other one Result is incorrect and incomplete
3. Interpretation of CNT characterisation results. (35%) Tube diameter and wall thickness from TEM, contaminants and qualitative from SEM, full interpretation from Raman. Missing one or two aspects in interpretation. 3 or 4 aspects missing or mistaken. Limited interpretation based on the extent of information available. Interpretation is substantially incorrect or incomplete.
4. Compare the strengths of each technique used
in characterization of CNT(20%)
Comparison demonstrates clear understanding of the principles of each technique, and their value in the characterisation process. Description is clear with 1 or 2 aspects missing Description is with gaps and 3 or 4 aspects missing Description is patchy with many aspects missing Description is unclear and most of the aspects missing
5. Determine the grain size from the EBSD and use H-P equation to determine the yield strength. Describe the texture of the tested material. (25%) Grain size measured by repeatable technique. Calculation complete and correct. Reasoned description of microstructure based on EBSD data. Most of the exercise correct, but there are 1-2 errors/omissions. Most of the exercise correct, but there are 3-4 errors/omissions. Half of the exercise completed correctly, but major omissions/errors in remainder. Results are substantially incomplete or incorrect.

NOTE:
  1. Students receiving a failure grade in one or more of the above elements should discuss this grade with their tutor.
  2. The final mark will be weighted into the overall assessment of the Unit as indicated in the Unit Outline.

Exercise 1. Characterisation of Ca
on Nanotubes

Introduction
Ca
on Nano tubes were generally used in daily life application because it improved mechanical
strength, electrical property and thermal conductivity. One of the major advantages of CNTs is
highly conductivity. The combination of N and M in CNTs play an important role in increasing
the conductivity. These N and M parameter known as sutural parameter which is used to define
twisting of Nano tubes. Apart from conductivity several other application such as thermal
conductivity, Field emission, Energy storage, Fi
es and fa
ics and air & water filtration etc
CNTs widely used.
Ca
on nanotubes (CNTs) are characterized as a graphene sheet rolled-up to form a tube, for
example a single-walled tube (SWNT). When two or more concentric tubes are placed one into
another, multi-walled ca
on nanotube (MWNT) is formed. According the requirement there are
several method were used to formed CNTs such as (1) Synthesis Methods (2) Arc Discharge
Method (3) Laser Ablation Method (4) Chemical vapour Deposition Method (5) Hydrothermal
Synthesis (6) Electrolysis (7) Solar Technique.
Recently there were advance characterization technique were used to co
elate the above mention
properties with the CNTs. In present work Transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), Scanning
electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Raman Spectroscopy was used to identify to CNTs formation,
tube diameter and degree of uniformity.
Results and discussion
(1) Scanning Electron microscopy study
