Assessment 2:Presentation

Due:11:59 PMAEST11thApril
Time limit:10 minutes
Marks:15% of total unit grade

Overview

For this assessment, you are required to prepare an online audio-visual presentation or video based on a topic below. The presentation will not be delivered to a “live audience”. You may choose which format you use for your presentation, such as a narrated PowerPoint presentation or YouTube video, etc. Your goal should be to deliver the information in an engaging and visually appealing manner.

Task

  1. Select a topic from the list below.
  2. Consult the literature relevant to the topic.
  3. Prepare a presentation including the following information
    • A description of the toxin/agent
    • The illness(es) it causes and the population(s) at risk
    • Routes of human exposure
    • An overview of how epidemiologic and/or toxicological studies were used to determine its disease causing potential
    • Any controls that have been put in place to prevent or control human exposure

Topics

  • Dioxin
  • Asbestos
  • DDT
  • Methylmercury
  • Lead

You may select another topic with approval from the unit convenor

Resources

There are various online tutorials which demonstrate how to make/edit videos or add voice over to PowerPoint presentations.Below are a couple of examples:

Submission instructions
Your presentation or a link to the presentation must be uploaded to Canvas. Please keep in mind that if you choose to upload a file it will be large so allow extra time for the upload (i.e. don’t waituntil 11:50 p.m.on the due date!)

Peer review

In addition to uploading your audiovisual presentation, you are required to review two of your peers' presentations using the rubric provided (see below). You are also required to provide some (brief) qualitative feedback in the comments section of the assignment submission.

Peer review engages students in the learning process and develops their capacity to reflect on and critically evaluate their own learning and skill development. It supports the development of critical thinking, interpersonal and other skills, as well as enhancing understanding within the field of knowledge of a discipline (University of New South Wales 2019).

The peer-reviewed feedback will be moderated by the unit convener. Your feedback will be anonymous, but please be mindful to use supportive and constructive language. You will be assigned three presentations to review after the due date.Peer reviews must be completed by11:59 p.m.AEST,16 April. Your assignment will not be assessed until you have completed your peer reviews.

For detailed instructions on how to complete your peer reviews, please see the following link:https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC XXXXXXXXXX

DESCRIPTION
Asbestos is a group of six naturally occu
ing minerals that are composed of flexible, soft fibers that are heat-resistant.
Exposure to asbestos causes cancers and other diseases, including mesothelioma and asbestosis (King D, 2021).
These fibers are resistant to heat, electricity and co
osion (D. Sen, 2015).
Asbestos is a naturally occu
ing mineral composed of soft and flexible fibers that are resistant to heat, electricity and co
osion. These qualities make the mineral useful, but they also make asbestos exposure highly toxic. The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 legally recognizes six types of asbestos that fall into two categories: Amphibole and serpentine (King D, 2021). Commercially, the most important of these are the white, blue, and
own varieties, otherwise known as chrysotile (a serpentine asbestos), crocidolite, and amosite (both amphiboles) (Luus K, 2007).
Asbestos is an effective insulator, and it can be used in cloth, paper, cement, plastic and other materials to make them stronger. But when asbestos dust is inhaled or ingested, mineral fibers can become permanently trapped in the body (D. Sen, 2015).
2
ILLNESS(ES) IT CAUSES
Over decades, trapped asbestos fibers can cause inflammation, sca
ing and eventually genetic damage.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. The mineral also causes asbestos-related lung cancer, ovarian cancer and laryngeal cancer.
Other diseases related to asbestos are Asbestosis, Pleuritis, Pleural effusions, Diffuse pleural thickening, pleural plaques, COPD (Kang D, et al., 2013).
An article by Kang D, et al., in 2013 explained that over decades, trapped asbestos fibers can cause inflammation, sca
ing and eventually genetic damage. A rare and aggressive cancer called mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. Asbestos also causes other forms of cancer as well as progressive lung disease.

3
POPULATION(S) AT RISK
The majority of patients with asbestos-related diseases are men in their 60s or older. This is because asbestos-related diseases have a long latency period, often taking decades to develop (D. Sen., 2015).
They usually trace back to occupational exposure at workplaces historically staffed by men.
The high-risk occupations involved are Construction, Mining, Electricity Generation, Shipbuilding, Firefighting, Heavy Industry and Military Service (Luus K., 2007).
No amount of asbestos exposure is safe, but asbestos generally has the worst effects when a person is exposed to an intense concentration of it, or they are exposed on a regular basis over a long period of time.
Asbestos accumulates in the body with every exposure, and there is no known way to reverse the damage it causes.
Fibers are easily inhaled once they become ai
orne. It is important to avoid...
