1. Introduction
1.1. Subject overview
This subject is designed to give students a firm grounding in the legislative, political, cultural and ethical
environment of the early childhood profession. Students will consider the roles and functions of early childhood
education and care settings in relation to government policy and legislative requirements. Students will explore
national and international conventions and professional codes of ethics. In depth study will be provided on
cu
ent child protection legislation and procedures and how to apply this in practice. A general introduction to
est practice and legislation relevant to working with Aboriginal and To
es Strait Islander peoples will be
provided. Students will also develop academic writing and studying skills for a higher education course.
1.2. Subject objective
The aim of this subject is to enable students to develop professional judgement within the context of legal,
ethical and cultural frameworks and to develop academic writing, basic research and presentation skills.
1.3. Subject learning outcomes
At the end of this subject students will be able to:
1. Identify relevant legislation and organisational policies and practices in meeting the ethical obligations
of the early childhood profession.
