Discussion: Video Log (Vlog) of Community Health Intervention
For this Discussion, you will experience what a real health department is like by viewing the media provided in this module. You will have an “inside” look into the organization of a local health department and gain insight into the responsibilities of the people working in the core areas of public and community health. You will also become familiar with two of the greatest examples of public health in action today, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Healthy People 2020 initiative. You will gain insight into health-related goals that have been developed to address the identified needs of communities on a local and global scale.
To Prepare:
Review the Learning Resources and Kaltura instructions in this Module. The Vlog will require you to create a 3- to 5-minutevideo of yourselfexplaining the community health intervention example. You will upload the Community Health Vlog to the Discussion section. You must also provide thewritten textof your Community Health Intervention Vlog with the APA references in your post.

By Day 5
Posta video log (Vlog)of yourself presenting a community health intervention example that 1) targets a specific population in a developing country and addresses one of the WHO Millennium goalsor2) targets a specific population in the United States and addresses one of the Healthy People 2020 overarching goals. The intervention you describe could be one you are proposing or a real-life example of a current or recent (past 2 years) intervention.
Your Vlog assignment must include the following:
- Begin your video by explaining whether this is a real-life example or one that you made up.
- In your video, briefly describe the community health intervention, including the target population.
- Explain which WHO Millennium or Healthy People 2020 goal is being addressed.
- Describe which level(s) of prevention is(are) being address by this intervention (primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention). Your response must demonstrate your understanding of the level(s) of prevention.
- If using a real situation, specifically identify the types of public health or health education professionals that are involved, and briefly explain their roleor, if using a fictional situation, identify at least one type of public health or health education professional that you think would be involved. Explain what you think their role would be, and why.
- Identify at least one public health or health education essential service that is being carried out by the identified professionals, and explain how that is being done.
- Write up, and post, an exact transcript of your video—including any sources used—in APA format.
By Day 7
Review the Vlogs posted by your peers, and consider the list of Discussion prompts, below. Use them to begin discussing the various interventions that were described in the Community Health Intervention Vlogs by your colleagues. You must respond to your first peerby Day 7and a total of at least three peersby Day 14to receive engagement credit.
You may discuss:
- Other stakeholders (non-public health/health education) who might be involved in the intervention
- Additional goal(s)—WHO Millennium or Healthy People 2020)—that would be or are being addressed by the intervention
- Additional public health essential services that would be or are being addressed by the intervention
- Barriers or challenges that might be faced by the target population/community in terms of the WHO Millennium goal(s) or Healthy People 2020 goal(s) being achieved
- Alternative interventions that may address the same goal in the same population described
- The differences between local, state, and federal systems with respect to their responsibilities and workforce.
- Additional services that could be added to the intervention to address the other levels of prevention (primary, secondary, or tertiary prevention). For example, if your intervention addresses secondary prevention, what could be added to also address primary or tertiary prevention.
Post your Vlog to the Discussion Board by Day 5. Respond to at least one peer by Day 7 and at least two additional peers by Day 14. Make sure that you have posted at least three peer responsesby Day 14with substantive contributions based on the above points. Refer to the Rubric for specific grading criteria on what constitutes substantive content and peer engagement. Continue the Discussionuntil Day 14.
