How is online networking different from or similar to in person networking?

In today’s world there are so many things that are at our fingertips and when it comes to online networking some of us are all too familiar with what is on the Internet. It is most definitely easy to get information in today’s world versus even as little time as 20 years ago. It seems to be anything that we could possibly imagine. All we have to do is go to our search engine type it in and Wallah there it is. I personally use the search engine often, not to mention we have Alexa, weaned we have Siri and so on, with all of these technologies it is nearly impossible not to be educated on just about anything you could imagine. I never dreamed that I would at 48 years old be returning back to school especially to get a degree in something that I never even thought I would be interested in which is school in general. It seems funny to me That after having my children I couldn’t see myself working in any other field other than education. It's the most rewarding job a person could ever have. It is very helpful when you have all this technology at your fingertips. You Feel there is nothing that you can’t conquer because after all, anything that you need to know is all around you.Which for me makes going back to school much more doable than 20 years ago at that point there was a lot of answers but the answers you had to read through what seemed like a novel to just get one question answered. I was never the one in class to read and absorb what I was reading to the point where I was able to put it down in writing or even answer some of my questions on my schoolwork. Nowadays and networking it is most definitely easy to plug in a keyboard or ask a question and get a broad variety of answers and then you can Understand it better, put it into your own words and make sense of your assignment. Back when I was in school we obviously had the in person tactics and to me that was great because you were able to discuss in a group what you were reading or what you were preparing for and you could feed off of each other as of today due to Covid we are unable to get together and feed off of each other therefore once again being able to use all of our resources at our fingertips makes life much more manageable. I am guessing that no matter which way you were learning there are things that are going to stick in there it’s going to be things that are just not going to absorb but again that’s why I am loving the education field because not everyone learns the same and not everybody teaches the same it is our job to figure it out. That is the beauty of education not one person is the same as the next, that is the highlight of the job that I am in today I love working with children I love seeing their glowing faces when something clicks and I enjoy watching them grow after all our children are our future.

I think both networking options have good and bad options. I personally prefer in-person networking because you cannot get a real feel for someone from an online experience. In-person you are there and you get to get a feel for the person. You can see their body language and tell if they are sincere about your interaction. Normally, in-person networking is at some type of class or seminar, so there are opportunities to hear stories, work experiences and go out for drinks to get know the person for who they really are.

With online networking, you have to take what the person behind the keyboard is telling you as golden. There is no emotion or a way to read a person, to know if what they are telling you, is sincere or just a story. However, with zoom and different websites now, there can still be a sort of face to face while doing internet networking. Also, with internet networking, you may be able to reach a bigger quantity of people, since most everyone has some access to the internet.

My only experience with internet networking would be here at the school. I have been able to meet some interesting people from all over the US and we all have a story as to why we are in school. I have been to several seminars, where networking was just as important as the seminar itself. This has led to a lot of professional contacts that I can still reach out to for advice if needed.

Indeed, we live in one of the most dynamic times where the world has changed drastically especially because of this raging pandemic. By the virtue of technology and its widespread relevance we are still able to connect with people although remotely but we are connected. Now interaction on video platforms is becoming a norm – right from school, a large chunk of human work entails collaborative in-person meetings and discussions. In these interactions, our
ains get trained to subconsciously scan for non-ve
al cues for decision making - be it making new friends or deciding how angry the teacher was with the late homework submission. This focus continues into corporate work with tasks becoming further team oriented and collaboration becoming critical to project success. The pandemic, however, changed the paradigm of collaboration. For a lot of us, initially, the meetings were very draining as our
ains adjusted to looking for cues in small screens with fake backgrounds. But we soon adapted to video calls and now seek more ve
al confirmations for direction. I ponder what can be next after this, perhaps to see augmented reality become a norm in meetings in the next few years. Not only will R&D teams discuss complex machine designs in 3D...
