Introduction
In an every growing and evolving environment of learning, teaching pedagogies have evolved over the course of time. In fact, in the last two decades in particular, learning English as a second language at various levels have become challenging; the diverse population having non-English background tend to learn the details of English language (Raufman et al, 2019; Lin, 2019). However, the turn of events is that the application of literary texts in enhancing the linguistic knowledge and skills of the ESL learners is somehow questioned; some scholar do not advocate for the use of literature in language as they perceive it intriguing to gain deep meanings of the literary texts in order to understand the complexities of language (Chou, 2021; Lin, 2019). What makes this credibility relevant in the context of using literature in ESL classrooms is that it enables students to deal with some of the linguistic expressions which are complicated and they are not taught in the classroom (Mpofu & de Jager, 2018; Chou, 2021). For ESL college level students, the syllabus covered in the universities is limited and it does not pertain to provide a holistic picture of the entire language. There is just selection of a few techniques, if the linguistic restrains are applied over pedagogy of teaching English as a second language. There are some set of rules in grammar and composition that students may acquire knowledge of but to enhance their overall ability, they must be introduced to the vase criteria of language which exists in literature only (Mpofu & de Jager, 2018; Chou,...
