Communication plays a very important role in creating an amiable relationship between patients and nurses. Effective communication needs nurses to be professional, courteous and maintain good interpersonal relationship. Communication is very critical in the well-being of the patient and his overall health outcomes (Kourkouta, & Papathanasiou, 2014). It is also important for nurses to overcome the ba
iers of communication in order to make communication effective (Hill, Hall & Glew, pp. 130).
Establishing a healthy nurse-patient relationship is the first step in opening the lines of communication between the nurse and patient. This can be done by creating familiarity through small talk and praise of the patient. Communication must be both ongoing and include patient education. Education can result in better compliance as well as patient engagement and it thereby improves patient care outcomes. Safety of patients is also ensured through communication (Levett-Jones eText, pp. 5-7). A healthy nurse-patient relationship established through trust and respect will create the necessary environment for improving a patient's overall health. (Moyle, 2003) suggests in this regard that developing good nurse–patient relationship can greatly help a patient when faced with emotional difficulties.
In taking a person-centred approach for Mr. Pham, I will praise him for being conscious about his health and taking good care of himself.
