INTRODUCTION
In a country like India, the contribution of communicable diseases is an alarming 26% with increasing reports of dengue, chikungunya, HIV and H1N1 (Phalkey, 2013). In this context, the article examines the significance of surveillance of communicable diseases at a global scale. 
IMPORTANCE OF DISEASE SURVEILLANCE 
The World Health Organisation defines surveillance as an ongoing scrutiny of disease factors like causes and transmission which in turn aid in adopting relevant control measures (“Surveillance systems reported…”, 2016). Different countries have developed national surveillance systems to obtain timely, detailed and up-to-date information of diseases. The data procured through census, surveys and vital registration systems (The George Institute, n. d.)
include analysis of remedies, laboratory, immunization and medications (Bagherian, 2017). Surveillance also identifies threats of bioterrorism internationally (Unite for sight, n.d.), 
Any health issue requires comprehensive understanding including type, causes, symptoms, distribution, mode of communication, affected population along with morbidity and mortality rates.
