Introduction
Chronic illnesses refer to those illnesses which take a very long time to be cured. They
are usually severe and require extensive medical care. Chronic illness generally refers to chronic
physical changes of an illness but chronic illness in reality involves more than physical
symptoms. Living with chronic illness is an adaptation to the psychological and emotional
changes associated with the illness as well. It’s normal for an individual, when diagnosed with a
chronic illness to start having odd feelings and wo
ies about family, health, their studies and
future in case of adolescent patients.
There is a lot of emotional and physical stress involved for the patient as well as his
family and so it is important that they obtain professional help and counseling while going
through and dealing with a chronic disease. A chronic illness leads not only to physical strain but
also trauma and mental illness. As the patient is unable to live a normal life and ca
y out his day
to day activities it becomes very stressful and depressing for him to stay at the hospital and
emain under medical supervision for a long period. So chronic illnesses need to be dealt with
patience and motivation.
Theories and concepts
Chronic illness causes a lot of mental stress to the patient and makes him respond in a
very different way. Their reactions are to be handled by the medical staff, including doctors to be
extremely patient and deal with them very tactfully. Emotional, cognitive and social responses of
such patients have to be studied in detail to be able to understand the condition of the patient and
treat him accordingly. It has been observed that patients with chronic illnesses require a lot of
emotional support and so should be provided medical counseling which can help them deal with
it in a better manner.
Oppressive practices can be improved and made to succeed by empowerment. It can help
improve the mental health of the patient. It can help them become involved in a number of
activities and deal with their illness in a better manner. This helps them stay happier and feel
etter about themselves. Helplessness can cause a lot of frustration. So, it is extremely important
that the patient is able to do some amount of day-to-day work by himself. This has been found to
