Inadequacies in relief efforts of the disasters

and Local Planning report. After reviewing the document:

List three salient strategies that you might include to help prepare for 
future natural disasters.

Address how these strategies might have been beneficial with the past 
natural disasters.
Present the findings in the form of a 2–3-page comparative study. Conclude 
the study by including measures to further improve disaster/relief management.

Introduction
Natural disasters result to massive loss of lives and property. However, this can be controlled through the generation of future prevention plans. Despite the fact that relief management acts are carried out to control the situation, coordination and funds allocation is also required. Some examples of natural disasters with devastating effects include Hurricane Katrina and Japan’s earthquake.
Nature and Magnitude of the Disasters
Hurricane Katrina, a devastating category four Hurricane was the most destructive hurricane that hit the Gulf of Mexico and the southern regions of the United States in 2005. The massive damage caused by the Hurricane is estimated at $ 100 billion; the worst damage ever recorded in the history of the US. New Orleans City was the most affected as most parts of the city sits six feet below the sea level. The disaster resulted to massive flooding, loss of lives and a displacement of over 100,000 people who had no chance of fleeing (Salloum, et al., 2011). On the other hand, the 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan was recorded as the most devastating natural disaster that hit Japan in 2011. The earthquake triggered a tsunami alert along the pacific coast of Japan and other 20 countries (Stimpson, 2011).
Health Status of the Affected
Over 200,000 Hurricane Katrina victims were evacuated into Houston and a survey conducted after two months on the status of their mental and physical health, 60% of the victims were considered nervous, restless, hopeless, and spelt terror a number of times a week (Leitner, Barnett, Kent & Barnett, 2011). On the other hand, survivors of Japan’s earthquake were highly depressed. In addition, they suffered from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, which affected their social lives as well. Most of the survivors posed symptoms of increased arousal, displayed anger, avoidance and were hyper-vigilant (Chandler, 2012).
