Cachexia, commonly known as wasting syndrome, is a nutritional condition characterized by the deterioration of muscles (Schmidt, et al.). It is triggered by a pre-existing ailment or illness that triggers the patient's immune system to activate and become catabolic to the body, effectively turning against itself and eating away at the body. Cancer, autoimmune disorders (such rheumatoid arthritis), cardiac problems, infectious diseases (including HIV/AIDS, malaria, and TB), and diabetes are examples of significant illnesses. And wasting is not commonplace, despite the fact that it is not well understood. According to the Association on Sarcopenia, Cachexia, and Wasting Disorders, the condition affects many individuals with late-stage illnesses, including 5-15 percent of persons with chronic heart failure or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and as many as 60–80 percent of those with terminal malignancies (SCWS). Cachexia, a subsequent illness, causes fast weight loss in a short period of time, depending on the underlying medical condition.
