Deviance is a "social construction". What one person considers deviant, another person may consider acceptable. Once in our culture, being “alone” was considered deviant. Now most people remain single until 20 years old. Need to make a list of 10 acts that are usually considered deviating (see below) and personally rank them from most severe (1) to least severe XXXXXXXXXXThen you will give the list to 5 other people to do the same. These people may be close to you, acquaintances or strangers. Please do not show them your answers -- everyone should complete ranking on their own.. If you have more than 5 people do it, the better! However, you are only expected to have 5 people plus yourself. One more thing: It is best if you consider difference in respondents (gender, class, race, age etc.). and make note of it when you hand out your survey.
Here are the deviant acts in no particular order: murder, cheating on your spouse, burglary, rape, embezzlement, theft, prostitution, binge drinking, animal cruelty and vandalism.
1. Simply, begin by typing in the following sentence. "Hi everyone, I completed the ranking of deviant acts and I had 5 people do the same". If you had more people, you can add more people in your number.
2. Write one extensive paragraph in summarizing your findings (note: you will need to somehow "tally the results" and/or compare your responses). In your summary paragraph, consider responding to one or more of the following questions: What were people’s initial responses to you when you asked them to rank the deviant acts? Were there any surprises in how people answered? In terms of difference, did you notice any similarities or differences by age, race, gender, class? Were there any particular deviant acts that rose the top of everyone's list or sank to the bottom of everyone's list?
