Design of a Pipeline A long horizontal pipeline is to be designed to carry 50x103 bbl of crude oil per day. The pipe is to be of commercial steel.
Part 1: Identify the important variables Most of the important fundamental variables in this system should be obvious (see figure). The pipe dimensions are the diameter D and length L. The fluid properties are the density p and viscosity v. The "texture" of the pipe wall (i.e., the surface roughness e) is also important.

a) Show through dimensionless analysis that the pipeline operation can be described by the functional relationship:
D APR r,cn (e DV p) pV2 p
Part II: Experiment and scale-up It is decided to carry out a laboratory experiment from which the pressure drop in the field pipeline can be predicted. In the experiment, water is to be pumped though a plastic pipe. b) Find the diameter of the plastic pipe that is to be use in the lab experiment. c) At what rate (in m3/s) should water be pumped through the pipe? In the experiment, a pressure drop of 1 pa is measured. Estimate the pressure drop in the field pipeline.

Solution: Part-1
In the pipe flow pressure loss will occur because of the surface roughness of the pipe wall.
This pressure loss is depending upon the diameter of the pipe, viscosity of fluid, velocity, length of the
pipe, and density of the fluid and surface roughness.
( )
In dimensional analysis the dimensions on both sides should be equal. Let a, b ,c, d, e, f are the
parameters then:

By equating the powers of M on both side of the...
