Electromagnetic Crane 
We need to Design an Electromagnetic Crane which can lift some small ferromagnetic 
materials. 
Scope of the Project 
This project of electromagnetic crane is very useful for Scrap yards dealing with magnetic 
material if fabricated at larger levels. Even this can be used as a separator at most of the mines 
dealing with magnetic materials. Magnetic materials can be easily separated out effectively with 
the help of electromagnet. Cranes are always useful in lifting tons of loads at scarp yards. 
Materials to be Used 
Some important materials needed to build the physical set up of crane. A software programme is 
also needed to automate the system of indicators on crane so it may be easier for the operator to 
manage it. 
Bolts 
1”-4” Long Bolts are required to tighten the various joints of the crane. 
Magnet Wire 
 A magnet wire is needed which can produce effective magnetic field required for lifting 
magnetic materials. 
Here we use 30-40 Gauge Magnet wire made up of regular solid copper core else we can also use 
nickel. Cost of the magnet wires depends upon the manufacturers, but it is approximately $10 per 
200’. 
Paper Clips  
More than 40 paper clips are required to join smaller threads of the crane. 
Pans 
We require two pans which can act as lifting pans. 
Battery  
For running the whole system of electrical wiring a 5V to 7V battery is also required.  
Construction Materials  
Some construction materials are required to make a physical crane set up for demonstration like 
wood, wooden glue, screws etc. 
Functional Equipments 
We require a stepper motor , A DC motor, LED’s and an Electromagnet to make it functional. 
Stepping Motor 
Stepper motor is just a motor which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy.
