DESCRIPTION:
As we have encountered, there is a heavy burden on governments to respect, protect, and promote human rights. Although the responsibility of upholding human rights does not fall solely to governments, their power to create and enforce laws both domestically and internationally places the health of human rights squarely in their hands.
Among the questions we must then ask are: How do we keep governments accountable to human rights standards? What recourse is there for citizens when their elected officials/government abuses human rights? How do citizens ensure their government and leaders enact progressive laws that respect, protect, and promote human rights?
This assignment asks you to focus on a cu
ent government’s policies (i.e. the policy or policies of a specific country) as they relate to a human rights issue and how the government has upheld, or fallen short of, their human rights responsibilities.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Find a picture on the internet that you think captures a human rights issue as it relates to governmental action of a country of your choice. There are many other options so be creative!
2. Insert the picture into your Word document, tell a
ief story about the photo, and write a reflection on the picture and how you believe it represents a human rights issue, for better or for worse. Feel free to speak in the first person, and offer your emotional reaction, if you so choose, to the picture and the issue (or set of issues) it captures.
SUBMITTING:
1. Due date: End of Week 11
NB: All materials should be submitted via the class Dropbox
2. Length ~500 words, (approximately 2 pages double spaced not including the space the picture occupies)
3. References: Include a link to your picture and any other sources you consult
Your assignment is considered complete if:
· My choice of picture adequately and appropriately captures a governmental action that
can be framed as a human rights issue.
· My argument is clearly stated and maintained consistently throughout the assignment.
References to the issue are clear, and I demonstrate knowledge of the course material.
· I support my argument with examples from the text, critical observations and research
that provide sufficient evidence that my position is sound.
· My argument is laid out in a logical way and does not contain gaps. Sentences and
paragraphs flow together naturally.
· My writerly voice is consistent and persuasive. My tone enhances my argument.
· My assignment is free of spelling and grammatical e
ors.
Your assignment is considered incomplete if:
· My choice of picture does not adequately and appropriately capture a governmental
action that can be framed as a human rights issue.
· It is not clear what my argument is, nor to I demonstrate knowledge of course material.
· When I provide evidence from the text, I do not show how it is related to my argument.
· My writerly voice is not persuasive, is stilted and unnatural, and my meaning is often
unclear.
· My assignment lacks structure.
· My assignment has not been proofread.
