Describe how the nurse would recognise and respond to potential abuse in Jack’s case and discuss
the potential impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences such as abuse on Jack’s long-term health
and development.

Introduction
Child abuse and neglect is an emerging concern nowadays, which affects the growth and development of a child, both mentally and physically. A child can go through different kinds of abuse including physical abuse, mental abuse or sexual abuse, which creates a long-term effect in their life. Such abuses can be performed by any person with whom the child is in contact with.
Several signs can be found in a child who is experiencing abuse such as physical injuries and
uises all over the body with no explanation to it, the child becoming quite and always afraid of meeting new people, change in walking style of a child, behaving aggressively towards everyone and many more. Such effects are enhanced by neglecting them and not taking the co
ect measure to stop the abuse going on with the child.
Recognition of Abuse
In the given case, Jack is a 3-month-old baby with right femur fracture. Firstly, the occu
ence of a fracture in an infant is very rare as infants are to be taken care of all the time and it is impossible of a 3-month-old baby to fall down from a height, as they do not learn to roll or move from one place to another at such an age. Moreover, Jack had oval shaped
uises spread all over his ankle and even in the left ear.
Such
uises can never be formed from falling down from a couch, which was said by Jack’s mother. Such vague reasoning from the mother indicates the case to be physical abuse and neglect of the child. As mentioned by Ayling et al. (2020), the child is most vulnerable to abuse at the age of infancy to five years when he cannot express what is going on within him. In such cases, the physical indicators of abuse must be considered by the family, parents, medical practitioners or the trainers who closely deals with the child.
Such indicators include unexplainable injuries all over the body of the child,
uises, which take a long time to heal and occu
ence of new
uises time to time. Other indicators include location of the
uise, which can be on hands, legs, face, genital area, ears, thighs and resemblance of the
uise with any kind of harmful object such as belt, knuckles, cigarettes, and unrealistic injury according to the age of the child. Such indicators are recognised in Jack’s case where he shows
uises all over his ankle, ear and even a fracture on the right femur, which is unrealistic to occur in a child of three months of age. Such signs clearly show the presence of child abuse and neglect which is going on with Jack but not taken care of.
Response to Abuse
Once the signs present in the child are confirmed to be abuse or neglect towards the child, the nurse must take appropriate actions to deal with it. Such action firstly includes reporting the act of abuse to the higher authority of the medical board or the person who is in in power above her. As mentioned by Jack et al. (2021), the child abuse once identified must be reported to the local child protection agency. In this case, too, the nurse must take the support of the supporting agencies of child abuse to be in touch with the child.
Home visits at regular intervals can be done from the nurse’s side to keep a track on the physical abuse of the child. The nurse can build a friendly relation with the mother to gather information about her family and their feelings towards the child. The nurse must evaluate every aspect of the situation and then make a clear reporting against the Child Protection Act violation, which will provide a proper protection to the child through agencies and monitor the case time to time.
The nurse too can make home visits to monitor the case in this matter of Jack’s abuse. According to Hegarty et al. (2020), including and involving oneself in the investigation of child abuse and neglect is the best way to respond to it. In this case, the nurse must include herself and find out the cause of the abuse and the person involved in it. This involvement will help in the mandatory reporting of the abuse by the nurse, which is her responsibility after recognition of the abuse and neglect. As stated by Nouman et al.
