Describe and compare the following HVAC systems. How do they differ in function and what
are the relative advantages and disadvantages of the systems. Graphically represent each
system with a sketch.
c) Air-water systems
Solution:
The selection of air conditioning system is mainly dependent on the fluid medium that is used to transfer
energy from conditioned space to air conditioning plant.
a) All-Air Systems:
In all air system, air is the fluid medium that is used for transfe
ing energy in thermal distribution
system. In the system, the processing of air takes place in the air conditioning plant and the air is then
transfe
ed to the conditioning space via insulated ducts by using appropriate fans and blowers. In case
of summer, the specified amount of sensible and latent heat in air is extracted from the conditioning
space while in case of winters, the heat is supplied in the conditioning space. The air returning from the
conditioned space is transfe
ed back to the plant. The air is again processed which completes the cycle.
Working :
i. Outdoor air (OD) and recirculated air (RC) are mixed in appropriate ratios by using dampers.
ii. This air is then allowed to pass through cooling and dehumidifying coil, a heating coil and a
humidifier using an insulated ducting and a supply fan as shown in fig above.
iii. The moisture content and temperature of the air is controlled to their required values as it
flows through the coils with the help of Thermostat (T) and humidistat (H).
a) All-air systems
) All-water systems
iv. This air is then transfe
ed in the conditioned space where it satisfies the cooling or heating
equirement.
v. The part of the air from this conditioned space returns as a part of recirculated air and the
emaining part leaves to the atmosphere.
) All-Water Systems :
In all water system, water is the fluid medium that is used for...
