Introduction
Euthanasia is an activity of where in a person, mostly a physician end the life of a person who
is in acute pain and suffering. The laws regarding the euthanasia are different in various
countries because of the different principals and ethical standards. Various categories of
euthanasia are: involuntary and voluntary. Voluntary euthanasia is regarded as legal in some
countries and U.S. states while Non-voluntary euthanasia is considered illegal in all countries
and is regarded as murder. Euthanasia continues to be the one of the most researched area of
the present day medical ethics.
Ethical Dilemma
As a physician witnessing the case wherein the patient is asking to end his life with the help
of medical interference to put an end to his life, it is imperative to solve this ethical dilemma
so that the patient and his family members can make a best decision for all the stakeholders
elated to the case. The problem can be best resolved by asking five questions which are
suggested by the Rion’s five stage model (1990). Rion illustrates how analysis can be used in
forming this 'integrated judgment' by use of his decision-making framework, the five stages
of which are:
1 Why is this bothering me?
The right to end one’s life cannot be granted just on the basis of the suffering as the suffering
is a relative term and used as an excuse by most of people who commit suicide. Thus, death
should never be facilitated by any other individual including oneself because committing
suicide is not a fundamental liberty. The dignity and mysterious nature of human life which is
unpredictable should be taken into consideration before the decision to end someone’s life is
