Word Count: XXXXXXXXXXwords (+/- 10%)
Weighting: 40 % = 25% (Report) + 15% (Video)
Total Marks: 40
Submission: via Turnitin and upload video file or share video link
Due Date: Tuesday 23:55pm (AEST), Week 13

Your Task

PART A: Report (25 marks)

• You have been employed as a Data Ethics Officer by an industry board (professional
ody) wanting to create a code of conduct around using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to (a)
diagnose disease in a person earlier in the progression of this disease or (b) predict the
spread of community diseases, in order to inform best practice in the healthcare
industry.
• You are being asked to produce a framework for a code of conduct for a medical board.
• You can choose either of the two applications above (earlier disease diagnosis or community
disease prediction using AI).
• This company code of conduct framework will also address individual responsibility as well as
ecommended government oversight.
• Your framework will be presented in a report (a suggested structure is below).

PART B: Video (15 marks)

• Present a 10-minute video explaining your recommendations and thought process

Assessment Description
Address the following sections in your report.
PART A: Report (25 marks)
Introduction (5 marks)
• Introduction to the use of AI in medicine as a whole and fears related to its use, e.g.

“Seventy-one percent of Americans surveyed by Gallup in early 2018 believe AI will
eliminate more healthcare jobs than it creates.”

Source: https:
healthitanalytics.com/news/arguing-the-pros-and-cons-of-artificial-
intelligence-in-healthcare
• Describe how AI is being used either to (a) diagnose disease in a person earlier in
the progression of this disease or (b) predict the spread of community diseases

Data Ethics Issues (10 marks)
• Outline possible data security, privacy and ethical issues associated with the use of
patient data in AI. For example, why it may not be a good thing as stated in the quote
elow.
“It’s true that adding artificial intelligence to the mix will change the way patients
interact with providers, providers interact with technology, and everyone interacts with
data. And that isn’t always a good thing.”

intelligence-in-healthcare
Applicable Principles (8 marks)
• Outline theoretical and legal principles which are relevant to the data issues identified.
Afterall, if the algorithm gets it wrong who is to blame?

References and structure (2 Marks)
• Include a minimum of five references
• Use the Harvard referencing style
• Use appropriate headings and paragraphs
You will be given a maximum of two marks for this section

) What part of the report did you found most difficult? (1 Mark)

c) Recommended Code of Conduct (7 Marks)

o Set out a recommended framework for a code of conduct to be followed within the

PART A: Introduction
The use of Artificial Intelligence in medicine:
Since its initial description in 1950, artificial intelligence has developed into a system that is capable of deciphering complex algorithms and self-learning. A new era in medicine is beginning, one where AI may be used to improve workflow efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, and risk assessment models in clinical practise. The degree of data-based therapy utilising AI models has increased as a result of the application of AI. Each patent is viewed as a customer in this scenario, and the technology is able to accurately assess and quickly address the unique physiological issues of various people.
A contentious topic has been the quick adoption of artificial intelligence in medicine (AIM). Arnold believed that the use of AI and a vast amount of information could help to improve healthcare by offering a high amount of accuracy throughout diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics. While many argued that there are numerous risks involved in the application of AI as a new technology in the healthcare industry. AI must learn how to do their tasks, just like healthcare professionals. Human intelligence was required to create the appropriate algorithms for AI to do a variety of jobs, including establishing diagnoses, creating treatment plans, creating triage tools, and enhancing both in as well as online consultation.
How AI is utilised to make diagnosis or perform medical duties
Through the method of drug formulation and clinical research, there is an extra benefit. The vast amount of molecular data pertaining to medication candidates has been examined using AI to ascertain the overall impact that it would have on them. Several start-up businesses have used deep learning advancements to tailor the medication delivered to each patient subgroup.
Even while AIM adoption is still in its early stages, its algorithms still have a lot of untapped potential that might be very helpful to the healthcare industry. This is reinforced by a few outstanding examples of how AI algorithms are being used in the healthcare sector and how they are accurate and clinically relevant:
· Chest radiography using the AI system DLAD (Deep Learning Automatic Detection) was able to identify potentially harmful cancer cells that even specialists could not immediately identify.
· When compared to a human radiologist, the Deep Learning algorithm obtained a high level of accuracy (96%) in identifying tuberculosis (TB) on chest X-rays, according to research by Lakhani & Sundaram (2017).
· Weng et al. (2017) found that the ML algorithm might increase the accuracy of predicting cardiovascular risk and thus offer preventive care that could help a lot of individuals who could be at risk of having a heart attack.
· Patients can receive treatment from a specialist at any time, even in remote areas where doctors are in short supply, thanks to telemedicine, or the "robot doctor" (Wa
aich 2019). It is evidence that many patients with restricted access will find technology to be a useful tool.
The wo
ies around the application of Artificial intelligence in medicine
Despite the potential benefits that AI could
ing to the healthcare industry, there is also a very real concern among those who work in the industry that they will be replaced by robots. On the other hand, Minfield and Meskó thought that a lot of tasks still needed human emotions, which AI couldn't imitate or take the place of. Health professionals should view this technology as an aid to human intellect that can help them do a better job of caring for patients. In additional to the wo
y of job redundancy, there is a great deal of wo
y about safety because AI could make blunders by making bad recommendations, which could result in the loss of human life (Fo
es Insight 2019). As a result, it's crucial that healthcare personnel have control well over decision the algorithm makes and employ AIM as an addition to decision support systems (DSS).
