Introduction
The Australian Aboriginals especially, are a community of indigenous people, who have been constantly discriminated against and have experienced inequality and social injustice. Leo is a 50-year-old man belonging to the aboriginal community of Australia. He has been suffering from several chronic diseases, which are inclusive Type 2 Diabetes, Coronary Artery Disease, and Hypertension. However, his previous adverse experience with a healthcare provider regarding his cultural background has compelled Leo to disengage from healthcare. Leo's wife and children have convinced him into meeting a nurse, conduct a health checkup, and care plan, to which he has agreed. The essay aims to establish culturally safe ways of communication so that a culturally safe treatment environment is developed.
Communication and Cultural Safety
Since Leo belongs to the community of Aboriginal Australians, he has experienced discrimination, racism, and a lack of cultural understanding in the arena of healthcare. His past bad experiences with his previous healthcare providers have traumatized Leo largely. Therefore, it is important that as a nurse, I ensure that Leo feels culturally safe in the healthcare su

First and most importantly, it is essential that before taking notes about his health condition, I build a rapport with him. According to Crawford, Roger, and Candlin (2017), it is extremely important to establish a bonding between the patient and the nurse as it helps in the procedure of care and support. Moreover, in traditional cultures, individuals give a lot of importance to the ideas of relation and bonding. Rapport with Leo can be established simply by introducing me in a warm and friendly manner. It can be accentuated by sharing stories about common topics of interest and asking about the place of origin and so on.
Another way to establish effective communication with Leo would be to overcome the language ba
ier by using simpler terms and words as well as the jargon, explain the reason behind asking questions. According to Lorié, Reinero, Phillips, Zhang and Riess (2017), using graphic media such as pictures, diagrams, models, and DVDs to explain concepts and terms can also help in establishing proper communication. Traditional languages such as Creole should be used with caution. Even for documentation purposes, it is important to check whether I have co
ectly understood his perspective and vice versa. Time plays a significant role in the lives of the aboriginal community. Therefore, it is important to offer Leo flexible consultation hours as well as give him adequate time to open up about his health conditions.
Non-ve
al communication using hand gestures, facial expressions, nods, and so on, are significant ways of communicating with Leo (Sibiya, 2018). It is also important to be mindful of personal space. Going too near an individual without...
