Leadership is all about leading the allocated members in such a way so that not only maximum outcome could be taken from them also their personal consent is taken care of. Leadership can be a necessary tool especially among the healthcare industry where staffs of many disciplines work together in order to provide the best consumer experience, wherin nursing is not an exception. Porter-O'Grady and Malloch (2015) mentioned that leadership is a necessary aspect that the registered must possess in order to guide as well as govern the working of others. This due to the fact that the leadership aspect is not only limited to the co-workers instead it also inculcates the patients as well as the adjoined families because the poor performance of even one member
eaks the synchronisation. Further, an ineffective leading style, which is not in accordance to the situation, puts an adverse effect on the morale as well as the productivity of the staff members.
Leadership styles for clinical and registered nursing (RN) practices
Depending upon the course of time as well as the demand of situation different leadership styles can be applied to a profession however, clinical practice is very much different and therefore, there are four major leadership styles that are being applied, which are Autocratic, Transactional; Laissez Faire and Transformational leaderships. Each one of them possesses different principles and different perspectives towards leadership, which are being discussed below—
Autocratic leadership
Autocratic or authoritarian leadership style is the type of leadership where the leader only provide with the order and the staff members or the members allocated to the leader follows them strictly. This type of leadership do not take into consideration the skills or the abilities that the workers or individuals may possess instead it is solely based upon the concept of monarchy where the workers follows the orders of king word by word and failure to do so results in punishment.
Moreover, while performing the task of decision making employee’s or the worker’s input is not even considered instead the manager themselves decide what can be best based upon the exposure, knowledge or experience they may possess. Cope and Mu
ay (2017) specifically emphasised on autocratic leadership with the viewpoint that this type of leadership style is not supportable or cannot be applied to clinical practice under normal conditions because under normal conditions workers or the supporting nurses works in accordance to the requirement of situation.
Since, there are numerous patients in the clinic or hospital to handle and therefore dictating the workers or individuals, which task to perform is not possible. Moreover, it also seems unethical since, working environments should be free and therefore, everyone should be allowed to think freely and provide the respective decisions regarding the situation. However, this is not feasible if autocratic leadership is being applied. Further, Pullen Jr (2016) mentioned that mistakes in this type of leadership style are completely unacceptable and even punishments can be given to the employ who fails to abide by the instruction that is why this type of leadership can work for places such as military, prison or jails that is where the work has to be taken form the individuals in any case.
However, this is not the case in clinical practice as it is a moral work where everyone must possess freedom. Nevertheless, according to me, this kind of leadership can be required in clinical practice especially during the time period of emergency where available individuals are not skilled to perform the tasks and therefore there is a need to abide them under systematic instructions. Moreover, even when there is shortage of skilled workers, and unskilled individuals may to be employed without wasting time under discussion; they also will be needed to be abided under the specific guidelines in order to prevent the extent the loss.
