CASE STUDY: Sam is an 85-year-old African-American, WWII veteran. He is very proud of the fact that he had not been to a doctor in 35 years. He was recently hospitalized at the VA because of an injury due to a fall. While at the hospital, Sam was diagnosed with diabetes type II, Metabolic Syndrome, and congestive heart failure (CHF). He was given a prescription for hypertension, CHF, and DM II that can be filled without cost at the VA. Sam lives in San Diego, CA., where he can attend a free clinic. Some of the medications has negative side effects such as dizziness, impotence, and other unwanted side effects. As a result, Sam stopped taking his medications. It is strongly advised that Sam takes his medications and comply with prescribed treatment.
