To prepare for this Application:

  • Review the assigned pages in Chapter 16 in the course text Research Methods in the Social Sciences.
  • Review the video program for this week, located in the Learning Resources.
  • Review Lessons 31 and 33in the course text Using SPSS for Windows and Macintosh: Analyzing and Understanding Data.
  • Select one of the data sets from the GSS data disk to use for this Application.
The assignment:
  • Craft a 5- to 7-page paper in which you do the following:
    • State the statistical assumptions for this test.
    • Using the data set you have selected, choose two continuous variables for which you would like to test a relationship.
    • Develop the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis.
    • Use SPSS to calculate a correlation coefficient and a simple linear regression. You can decide which should be the independent (predictor) variable and which should be the dependent (criterion) variable.
    • Decide whether to rejector retain the null hypothesis.
    • Generate a scatterplot to visually assess the relationship between two variables.
    • Generate syntax and output files in SPSS. You will need to copy and paste these into your Application document.

This study involves to find how total family income differs with highest year of school education i.e. can years of school completed affect the total family income. One of the data sets from the GSS data disk is selected to observe whether the claim is valid or not. The data set has observations on two characteristics “highest years of school completed” of an individual and “total family income” of the household. There are 1500 respondents interviewed.
The descriptive statistics of total family income and highest years of school completed are given in the following table. It can be seen that total family income has an average 11.05 which co
esponds of $20000 to $24999. The variable highest year of school completed has an average of 13.69 with variability little below of 3. Avoiding the missing observations, the valid number of observation is 1439 here.
