Teaching Health and Physical Education to Young People:
“The idea is that the students we teach, each person, is a complex system of actions, thoughts and ideas
with particular histories and influences, and who interacts with particular contexts in unpredictable and
unique ways” (Hunter, 2006, p. 119).
Questions that might focus your thinking:
• Who are the students that you will be teaching?
• What assumptions have we formed about these learners?
• How do we as teachers respond to the needs of young people?
• Are HPE programs provided in schools responsive to students’ developmental and learning
needs?
• Are the HPE programs challenging, rewarding and engaging for young people?
• How are junior secondary HPE programs being developed to reflect local perspectives or
contexts?

iculum. What are the issues in delivering the HPE national cu
iculum? Consider
the issues of competing cu
iculum areas, or leadership attitudes to this non-academic subject area
(Hint-NAPLAN priorities). How can the HPE cu
iculum be successfully delivered?
3. Diversity in teaching Health and Physical Education. What are the ba

priorities, outlined in the national cu

when teaching literacy and numeracy in HPE lessons?
7. How might HPE be used in strengthening school engagement, particularly for students at risk of
disengaging? What might teachers do to help students enjoy Health and Physical Education?
Consider culture difference, students from marginalised/struggling home backgrounds, those
experiencing bullying.

Introduction
This paper highlights the significant issues related to the field of Health as well as Physical education in most of the Northern te
itory localities in Australia where the major issues found are the obesity, hypertension, depression, isolation and diabetes. Therefore, in this regard the teachers of health and physical education play a vital role in struggling against these issues and take care of peoples of these localities. Through HPE the students gain the knowledge of self-worth through learning and think critically about the health-related issues
Issues
The major issue relating the health factor, which affect the learning of several students in the Northern te
itories, Australia is that most of the students suffer from obesity, diabetes, hypertension and depression. According to Australian Association of Health and Welfare, more than two third of the adult as well as children group are overweight (Scott et al., 2020). The main reason of it is they lack the proper nutrition and food value. These kinds of children therefore often avoid participating in any kind of physical activities.
As an outcome of this, they gain too much weight by just sitting ideal and eating the junk foods. Some of the students are also found to suffer from hypertension as well as depression as of their poor physical strength and for this, they hesitate to participate in any kind of physical activities. These types of students who remain isolated in doing any kind of physical activities are to be focussed by the teachers and should motivate them to come forward with hope and get involved in the physical education.
According to Williams and Pill (2019), the teacher who played crucial role in providing the Health and Physical Education (HPE) to the students should took part in group interviews in order to understand the Quality Physical Education (QPE) and the certain factors that affect their construct. The findings of these teachers should include the sociological concepts of habitual, interdependence, detachment and involvement and thereby should motivate these children in developing positive attitude and take part actively in physical education.
HPE Cu
iculum
Australia is the first one to enjoy and experience the first national cu
iculum reform where both the states and te
itories have been responsible in delivering and adopting these cu
iculums within their schools. Nevertheless, several issues were raised while delivering this HPE national cu
iculum. Very slow changes were found in HPE national cu
iculum, but generally cu
iculum changes gradually.
The changes in the policies are not initiated the teachers are also lagging with new concepts. According to the case study of several schools in Katherine, the teachers were found to not working for the Whole School Cu
iculum Program (WSCP), which mainly focuses on the syllabus of HPE. Apart from these, it also does not take any kind of interest in HPE policy documents, which regulate the deliveries within the schools.
According to Barwood et al. (2020), the HPE teachers in Australia especially in the Northern te
itories are preparing themselves with the Initial Teacher Education Institution (ITEI) programme structures in...
