Clinical scenario
Angelo is a 50-year-old man. He has type 2 diabetes mellitus and has chronic back pain and a recent diagnosis of colon cancer. Angelo presented for assessment at his local hospital after being encouraged by his neighbour. He lives alone and was divorced about 10 years ago. He has two adult children who he sees about once a month. As a nurse, you are part of the multidisciplinary team responsible for Angelo’s assessment. On admission Angelo appears withdrawn, flat in affect and with limited eye contact.. He reports that he doesn’t have any motivation and has withdrawn from his friends and family. He finds it hard to enjoy activities that he used to like, and feels hopeless about the future. He expresses some thoughts of dying, and states that “maybe it would be better if I died”, however he denies suicidal ideation. He also wo
ies “constantly” about his cancer diagnosis and if he will survive stating “no one would care if I was gone anyway”.
