The first was how to unite a fractured nation; the second was how to incorporate millions of freed men, women, and children into the fabric of the country. Neither task proved to be easy. Following the assassination of President Lincoln, Andrew Johnson inherited what we now call Reconstruction. In the next several years, Johnson fought with Congress over the meanings of Reconstruction, especially in regard to black Americans. The election of 1876 put an end to the reconstruction of the former Confederate States, as a political compromise released the northern states from their responsibility to protect the freedom of black southerners. Introduction
The process of Civil War shaped the new social order in United States; the conventional roots of racial discrimination as well as the gaps in social equality were brought to the point of elimination by the efforts of the leaders of that time. However, from the broad perceptions of freedom and equality, the process of reconstruction was not an easy task to accomplish.
The joining of the confederate states into the union as well as making the lives of the millions of slaves positively good enough was some of the major challenges that this era brought forward. If seen from the perspective of growth, reconstruction became more of a confusing state instead of being a successful one and it was because of the fact that the no formal and strong intervening options were brought to the practical grounds. 
Historical Overview
At first, it is significant to note here that the post-Civil War era known as reconstruction up to 1876 is known for the complex challenges that the contemporary government had to deal with. One of the major challenges was to bring in the southern states in accordance with the political governance of Union. Most of the differences between the states and the union government were due to the radical approach of southern states towards slaves.
