Main issue found is regarding the reliability of a survey tool that could help to measure the consumer nutrition environment specifically in the urban areas. With the rise in importance and volume of food environment research, in general there has been lack of measurement tools that are reliable.
A cross sectional study design was set around a racially diverse downtown portion of Albany, New York considering specifically 6 Zip code areas where in research team visited 39 foot stores randomly selected out of 123 eligible ones in the year 2009 -2010.
The case gives detail information about development and reliability of a measurement tool in form of check list style that can accurately and quickly assess nutrition environment of customers with the help of minimally trained survey people. Later, the observation equivalence underwent inter-rater reliability as well as inter-method reliability. This study also explored factors that are in association with selected measure’s reliability.
Downtime Albany was considered for carrying out this study because it is an area of urban mix encompassing several ZIP code areas- out of these 6 were selected on city’s east side having 4 areas with high proportion of African Americans that does have low socioeconomic status and rest 2 were racially mixed ZIP area with moderate income status.
