Spring 2021
GROUP PROJECT ASSIGNMENT
(350 points)
Groups: Students will assemble into groups of five or six. Each student is
expected to collaborate with the group to achieve the assignment objectives.
Organization and distribution of tasks within the group are the responsibility of the
group members.
Objective: Each group will choose and research a topic related to aviation safety
and/or security. Each group will present the results of their research during one of
the in-class presentation periods set forth on the syllabus. Scheduling of the
presentations will be at the discretion of the instructor, and may not be announced
in advance; every group needs to be prepared to present on or after the first in-class
presentation date.
Topics: Student groups may select from a wide range of topics, as long as the
presentation relates to aviation safety and/or security, and has the approval of the
instructor. Some possible topics might include (but are not limited to):
Accident review. Review an aviation accident which illustrates an important
principle related to aviation safety or security. Research should start with, but be
not limited to, the official accident report (i.e. NTSB). Research from other data
esides the official report is encouraged. Analysis of that which is NOT in the
official report is encouraged.
Safety recommendation. Take on a safety topic that needs to be addressed
in the aviation industry. Indicate the background establishing the need for the new
egulation or procedure; state the recommendation, and how it should be
implemented.
Review a cu
ent safety procedure
egulation that should NOT have been
implemented. Identify the procedure; state why it is maladaptive: i.e. creates more
problems than it solves; is not cost effective; is impossible to enforce; causes other
problems, etc. Make a strong case using hard data and critical thinking: i.e. prove
your case.

Aviation security. Review an aspect of aviation security that needs
improvement; propose a solution; defend it to the extent possible using hard data
and critical thinking.
Other. Submit some topic you think is important to aviation safety and
security; submit to the instructor for approval.
Deliverables:
1. A written submission of the proposed topic. Format undefined. Upload to
Canvas.
2. A written abstract detailing the research and results to be presented. Not
less than two pages, excluding front and back matter. Format per APA 7.
Title page and reference list are required. See example paper posted in
Canvas, and APA 7 formatting. Content counts, as does spelling,
grammar and composition, and APA format. Use of spelling and
grammar checking software is encouraged. Upload to Canvas.
3. A powerpoint file of the presentation slides used in the in-class
presentation. Upload to Canvas.
4. Live, in-class presentation. Not less than 20 minutes, and not longer than
30 minutes in duration. Running overtime will cost points, and/or result
in the instructor cutting off the presentation (to protect the time for the
next group).
File formats. All text submissions will be in word or pdf format; the presentation
slides will be in powerpoint format. All files will be uploaded to Canvas by the due
date. Emailed files will not be accepted. Handwritten, scanned work will not be
