Food for Thought 9.1: Researching
Nutritional Ergogenic Aids: Go Through
the Steps for Evaluating a Nutritional
Ergogenic Aid
Go online and search for a nutritional supplement (not a drug) that is targeted toward
athletes. Choose any supplement that appears interesting and promotes/claims some
physiological benefit to athletic performance. Critique the advertisement and the product
using the guidelines below. Turn in a copy of the advertisement with your critique.
Nutritional Supplement Critique Guidelines
• List the supplement’s name and price per serving.
• Describe the claimed actions for athletic performance.
• Analyze the claimed benefits using what you know about physiology and biochem-
istry. Is there research from scientifically sound sources to support the product’s
claims? Describe the quality of the research on the supplement and/or ingredients.
• Is the advertisement based on testimonials only?
• Determine safety issues of the supplement and/or ingredients contained in the
supplement. Is the supplement or its ingredients banned by any sports or athletic
organizations?
• Determine if you would recommend this supplement to an athlete, and describe why
or why not.
