Institute of Medicine XXXXXXXXXXCrossing the quality chasm: A new health system for the 21st century (Report Brief). Institute of Medicine of the National Academies [Web page]. Retrieved from http://www.iom.edu/CMS/8089/5432/27184.aspx.

The IOM Report Brief, published in 2001, begins by stating: “The U.S. health care delivery system does not provide consistent, high-quality medical care to all people” (p. 1). The report discusses the problems with the U.S. healthcare system and outlines recommendations for achieving a high quality healthcare system in the future.

Since this report was written, how has progress been made? Provide four specific examples that are evidence of whether or not progress has been made in moving toward “a new health system for the 21st century.” Two of the examples must be from your personal experience and two examples from documented references.

The examples may relate to the Six Aims for Improvement, Ten Rules for Redesign, or the four main areas in regard to changing the environment. Some possible areas to consider:

  • One of the six aims is timely care. Do you know a hospital that has a significant problem with patient waiting time in the emergency department? What has the hospital done to solve the problem and what is the result.
  • The first rule for redesign is: Care is based on continuous healing relationships. Do you know an HCO that has implemented a system of electronic communication between the patient and the provider?
  • One of the four main changes discussed is: Applying evidence to health care delivery. Do you know of a treatment process that is governed by specific practice guidelines in many HCOs, but where physicians continue to use an outdated treatment process?

Write a conclusion about whether progress has been made based on your chosen examples. Present the examples and the conclusion in a 4-page paper as a Word document formatted in APA style.

Introduction
The United States health care delivery system does not provide high quality and consistent health care to the all the patients. In the United States, citizens should have the ability to depend on proper health care that satisfies their wants and needs based on the best scientific knowledge hence strong evidence that this normally is not the case. The difference between the cu
ent health care and the one that could have been implemented include technology and medical science that has improved at an ascending height in the last century. In addition, the US Public Health care delivery systems have not been able to cu
the gradually changing health care needs in the community. The public health’s vision is to improve the health of people, with an aim to restore the values of the people to serve (Berland et al, 2001).
Progress towards a New Health System for the 21st Century
Use of Information Technology
Information technology includes internet, which holds enormous potential for transforming the health care delivery system. Usage of automated systems includes reduction of e
ors in treatment and acts as a reminder, helping both patients and clinicians identify needed services. However, the challenges of information technology application should not be under-estimated since the health care is one of the most sophisticated economic sectors. The use of information technology helps in improving health care delivery, consumer health, measurement of quality and improvement, accountability of the public, researches in clinical and health services (Berland et al, 2001).
In Magee-Women’s Hospital of University of Pittsburgh Medical Centre, usage of technology has highly improved the services delivered. The use of technology helped to identify a certain 3-day-old baby abducted from the hospital after a female suspect was caught at the hospital. The surveillance cameras helped the authorities to apprehend the suspect.
Workforce Preparation
Health care is whereby people take care of other people in times of need and stress characterizing its fundamental nature. The essence of preparing effectively the workforce into making a smooth transition towards a health care system cannot be underestimated (Noffsinger & Chin, 2000). In Candler Hospital–Savannah found in the city of Chatham, found to be keener in their work. Their major obligation is to take care of patients regardless of their background. It is among many hospitals in the front position in ensuring...
